San Antonio, are you ready to rock? The widely celebrated Experience Hendrix Tour is making its way to our beloved city, and it’s shaping up to be an unforgettable night. The tour, which kicked off its latest leg on September 19 in Seattle—the hometown of the legendary Jimi Hendrix—will stop at the Majestic Theatre on Wednesday, October 9. It’s one of those events you don’t want to miss!
Tickets are already on sale, and with prices starting at just $49, fans are gearing up for an evening filled with amazing music. The lineup for the Alamo City show is impressive: you can look forward to performances by guitar virtuosos like Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Eric Johnson, Dweezil Zappa, and many more. Not to mention, Chris Layton, who played with Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, and artists from various genres, will grace the stage. Talk about an incredible musical feast!
Kenny Wayne Shepherd recently shared his excitement about the tour’s return after a five-year hiatus due to the pandemic. “Before COVID, this tour was typically a biannual event, but then everything changed,” he said during a phone interview. “Now that live music is back in full swing, it feels great to hit the road again.” He emphasized how the tour has turned into a big traveling musical family, where seasoned and new musicians alike come together to celebrate Hendrix’s artistry.
Shepherd continues, “We love doing this, getting to honor Jimi’s music while bringing in new talent to keep things fresh. There’s something special about artists of different backgrounds coming together to pay tribute to the immense talent that was Jimi Hendrix.” And if you’re wondering about the new faces at this year’s shows—keep an ear out for Samantha Fish and Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, who are bringing their unique styles to the stage.
Why does the legacy of Hendrix still resonate with so many musicians today? Shepherd thinks it boils down to the relatable emotion and artistry in Hendrix’s music, not just his technical prowess. “Great songs last forever,” he reflects. People may come to appreciate incredible musicianship, but if it doesn’t connect on a personal level, it often gets lost in the noise. “Hendrix wasn’t just a guitar hero; he was a songwriter who wanted to connect with people,” he explains. “His songs are timeless, and that’s why you hear them played everywhere, even today.”
The charismatic artist’s songwriting might sometimes be overshadowed by his guitar skills. But Shepherd emphasizes how many of Hendrix’s lyrics carry profound meanings, shaped by his incredible life experiences—including his time in the military. “When you delve deeper, you discover these fascinating tidbits about his history. His lyrics can often seem a bit eccentric at first, but they carry weight and depth,” Shepherd notes passionately.
It’s no wonder that songs like “Angel”, “Castles Made of Sand”, and “Voodoo Child” have stood the test of time, remaining beloved by audiences decades after they were written. According to Shepherd, “We’re lucky to still be able to share and perform these songs that people connect with on such a deep level.”
The anticipation is high for the San Antonio show. Shepherd says his personal favorite part of the set is a special medley featuring “Voodoo Chile Blues” and “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”. “There’s something electrifying about connecting those two iconic songs in one medley that I just can’t wait to share with everyone.”
So mark your calendars, gather your friends, and prepare to lose yourself in an evening that promises nothing short of musical magic. The Experience Hendrix Tour is set for 7 p.m. at the Majestic Theatre, located at 224 E. Houston St. With a show this exciting, it’s bound to be a night to remember!
