San Antonio, a vibrant city known for its rich history and comforting community, has a new reason to rally together. In a remarkable display of determination and hope, Kenneth Anderlitch just completed the longest run of his life, and he did it all to raise awareness for families battling addiction. This inspiring journey began in Washington D.C. and took him all the way back to San Antonio, covering an incredible 1,800 miles in just 42 days!
Kenneth’s mission was straightforward yet powerful: to spread the message that families can overcome addiction together. Partnering with a local nonprofit dedicated to supporting families in recovery, Anderlitch’s efforts were aimed at showing that hope and healing are possible.
The nonprofit organization, now launching its new program called Families in Recovery, aims to provide resources for parents dealing with addiction. This innovative program will allow families to stay together while parents work on their recovery. Referrals to the program will initially come from Child Care Services and specialty courts, ensuring that families get the help they need.
Families in Recovery isn’t just about treatment; it’s about creating a plan that meets each family’s unique needs. From housing plans to direct care, the program offers comprehensive support throughout the recovery journey. Kenneth passionately expressed, “Why not have that opportunity for some people who really need to just make sure they’re with their family as a whole? Because that’s all we got, right?”
The imposing journey was not just a test of endurance but a profound learning experience. Kenneth faced various challenges along the way, including harsh weather and the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. He noted, “I believe Kentucky got hit pretty hard, Tennessee got hit pretty hard. I saw some FEMA trucks going.” Yet, despite these challenges, every step was worthwhile, especially when it came to meeting families who shared similar stories of struggle and resilience.
As someone who has personally battled addiction, Kenneth understands that the journey to recovery isn’t one that needs to be faced alone. “It wasn’t until I became completely vulnerable that I realized, I can’t do this alone, and I have a problem,” he shared about his own experiences. This raw honesty paved the way for his healing and emphasizes the importance of community support in overcoming addiction.
Kenneth’s incredible run did more than just share a message; it also raised nearly $50,000 for the Families in Recovery program. This fundraising effort will provide vital resources for families looking to heal together. If you’re feeling inspired and want to contribute to this cause, there are still ways to help support Haven for Hope’s new program.
As he returned home, Kenneth brought with him not just the accolades of completing an extraordinary run but the assurance that the struggles faced can lead to triumph, both individually and within families. As the San Antonio community embraces the launch of the Families in Recovery program, there’s a renewed sense of hope that families will have the resources they need to heal together.
So, if you or someone you know is dealing with addiction, remember that there’s help available, and you don’t have to face it alone. As Kenneth beautifully put it, “That’s all we got, right?” Let’s come together as a community to offer support and encouragement for a brighter, healthier future.
