First Responders in San Antonio Commemorate 9/11 Victims with Tower of Americas Climb
In a poignant display of remembrance, first responders in San Antonio, Texas, climbed the Tower of the Americas twice on Wednesday morning, paying tribute to their fallen colleagues who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
A Display of Solidarity and Gratitude
Joining the national day of remembrance, the members from San Antonio Fire Department and San Antonio Police Department took on the arduous task clad in full tactical gear, symbolizing the identical challenge their peers faced twenty-three years ago. These brave men and women started their ascent up the tower at 8 a.m., climbing a total of twice, a feat that surpasses the number of floors climbed in the World Trade Center during the infamous 9/11 attacks.
Remembering through Collective Effort
The tradition, in place for the past 11 years, saw around 500 firefighters and police officers participating this year. While some experienced the horrifying event live on their television screens, others were subsequently called to war being in the military. A significant number of participants were not even born when the attacks occurred. Yet, they all chose to join and pay their respects, connected by their communal sense of duty and honor.

At the Canyon Lake Dam, the Canyon Lake Professional Firefighters Association hosted a freedom walk slated for 8 a.m. San Antonio College commemorated the day with a Patriot Day ceremony outside their Chance Academic Center at 9 a.m. Likewise, Saint Mary’s University initiated a solemn prayer service at their bell tower at 3 p.m.
Nationwide Remembrance
Across the country, several other organized events took place to respect and remember the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil. A significant gathering was noted at the World Trade Center in New York, where thousands of victims’ relatives, survivors, rescuers, and others gathered to recollect and honor the memory of the 2,977 lives lost that day.
