San Antonio is feeling the heat today, with sizzling temperatures reaching around 90 degrees. It’s definitely one of those days where you’re sweating just thinking about going outside! But, hold onto your hats folks, because changes are on the way as a cold front makes its way across our western counties and heads east. And with it, storms are brewing!
Here’s the scoop – a flash flood warning has been issued for several local counties including Kendall, Blanco, Medina, and parts of Northwestern Bexar County. This warning is in effect until 1:00 a.m. Tuesday. Doppler radar is indicating that these areas could see anywhere between one to three inches of rainfall. So, it’s time to prepare for a wet night!
This evening, we’re looking at a mix of warm weather and the potential for those pesky storms. The atmosphere is building up with just enough instability and wind shear to create a situation where isolated severe storms could pop up. Most parts of our area are under a level 1 out of 5 “marginal” severe storm outlook. You might want to keep an eye on the skies, because just to the north, there’s a level 2 out of 5 “slight” severe storm outlook that encroaches on some parts of our viewing area.
If you’re planning to head out tonight, be cautious! While an isolated shower or storm may roll through before 7 p.m., the real action begins from 7 p.m. to midnight as these storms develop along the I-35 corridor. This means that if you’re situated within 20 – 25 miles on either side of I-35, keep your umbrella handy!
The first storms are expected to rumble through Bexar County and then move south through the evening. Rainfall will be heavy, and we are looking at possible localized flooding due to the high rainfall rates. The storm activity will head east as the night unfolds, with any severe storm risk diminishing along the I-35 corridor by 1 a.m. Tomorrow morning might still greet us with a few leftover showers or sprinkles! Don’t worry, though, as most of the severe stuff should be cleared out by the time you’re rushing out for your morning coffee.
So, what can we expect in terms of rainfall totals? Looks like we might be getting anywhere from 0.50” to over 1.50” of rain in some spots, but our forecasting models have suggested that certain areas could see more than 2 inches! That’s definitely something to keep in mind if you live in a flood-prone area.
It’s essential that everyone stays informed and prepared as these changes roll in. With the potential for storms and flash flooding, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Check your supplies, secure outdoor items, and stay tuned for updates.
Remember: Mother Nature can be unpredictable, so let’s make sure we’re all taking precautions to stay safe! Enjoy the rest of your evening and keep those rain boots close – you might need them tonight!
