Explore the Haunted Bars and Restaurants of San Antonio This Halloween Season

Explore the Haunted Side of San Antonio’s Bars and Restaurants

As the spookiest season of the year unfolds, there’s no better time to explore the haunted corners of San Antonio. This vibrant city is brimming with rich history, and it comes with some ghostly tales that could send shivers down anyone’s spine. If you’re looking for a place where you can enjoy delicious food and drinks while keeping an eye open for spirits, you’re in luck! Here are five haunted bars and restaurants in San Antonio that serve up food with a chilling twist.

1. Amor Eterno

First on our spooky list is the intimate Amor Eterno, located in Southtown. Since its grand opening in 2021, co-owner JC Salinas has experienced more than his fair share of hauntings. From a Bible mysteriously flying off the shelf to a beer taking a nosedive to the floor on its own, the spooky happenings are hard to ignore. “It’s not the first time things have flown off the shelves here,” Salinas says with a knowing smile. If you’re feeling brave, head over to 540 S. Presa St. and check it out—just keep an eye on the shelves!

2. Grey Moss Inn

Originally opened in 1929 by Mary Howell, the Grey Moss Inn carries an air of mystery that makes it stand out. Today, siblings Martha Valadez, Marisol Mendoza, and Ezekiel Martinez have taken the reins, but the spirit of Mary is still said to be present. “We make a concerted effort to check in with Howell during each shift,” Valadez shares, ensuring that her spirit knows they mean no harm. Guests have reported faucets turning off and on, and candles being snuffed out by an unseen hand. If you’re curious, you can find this haunted gem at 19010 Scenic Loop Road, Helotes.

3. HAUNT Lounge

Up next is the ultra-stylish HAUNT Lounge at the St. Anthony Hotel. Each signature cocktail is named after a ghostly resident of this historic hotel. For instance, the Lady in Red cocktail is inspired by Isabella, a 1940s socialite who waited in vain for a lover that never showed. Her sadness is said to linger in the halls, a soft rustling of red silk hinting at her presence. With every sip, you toast to the spirits that dwell there, making it a perfect spot for both a drink and a scare! You can find this eerie lounge at 300 E. Travis St. in the heart of downtown.

4. Downstairs at Esquire

Another classic on our list is the historic Esquire Tavern, which opened just after Prohibition ended in 1933. A manager recalls how employees have heard their names called by unseen voices. In addition, a psychic once visited the bar and confirmed the presence of spirits lurking around, particularly in the women’s restroom. This remarkable establishment at 155 E. Commerce St. begs for brave souls to investigate.

5. Menger Bar

Last but certainly not least is the legendary Menger Bar, where whispers say that the ghost of Teddy Roosevelt still hangs around, keeping an eye on the place where he once recruited soldiers for the Rough Riders. With 32 identifiable ghosts reported by the bar supervisor, Angela Pena, you won’t run out of ghost stories to share. Make sure to stop by at 204 Alamo Plaza—who knows, you might just catch a glimpse of Teddy himself!

So, as you can see, San Antonio isn’t just a city rich in flavors; it’s also a hot spot for the paranormal! Whether you’re a ghost enthusiast or simply looking for a fun night out, these haunted bars and restaurants offer something unique—food, cocktails, and maybe even some spine-tingling encounters with spirits from the past. So grab your friends, or perhaps a ghostly companion, and embark on a journey through the eerie side of San Antonio!
