Man’s Heartbreak as Thieves Target Nonprofit’s Storage Unit

San Antonio – An increasing number of people in San Antonio and throughout the state are looking to storage facilities for their needs. However, this growing trend may leave their belongings exposed to thieves. One such victim is Fernando Mora, who has used the I-Storage facility for three years. He recently discovered that his unit was robbed, leaving him violated and despaired.

Man Discovers Break-In at his Storage Unit

In his first incident at I-Storage, Mora expressed that about $3,000 worth of tables, chairs, and canopies were taken from his storage unit south of the city. “Plus they put their own lock on the outside, which makes me think, lock it, we’ll come back later for the rest,” said Mora.

The Safety Concerns of Storage Facilities

Texas houses nearly 5,000 self-storage facilities, with an average monthly cost of around $97 for a 10-foot square unit without climate control. So, how safe are these facilities? Since the beginning of the year, the San Antonio police have received 50 calls to I-Storage, the company where Mora’s unit was burglarized. Most of these calls were related to burglary, disturbances, or suspicious vehicles.

Non-profit Organization Becomes A Victim of Theft

Mora utilized the storage unit for Moravation Ministry, his non-profit organization. Over its 10-year lifespan, the organization has gifted 10,000+ toys and 1,000 bicycles to disadvantaged children, along with nearly 1,000 medical braces over the past 2 years. “I know there’s people out there that just lock it and leave it there for months maybe years and just pay their monthly dues. You may want to check up on it and make sure no one is messing with your personal property,” Mora advised.

Potential Criminals still at Large

Despite filing a police report, the criminals responsible for the robbery are yet to be apprehended. The news comes as a stern reminder for the public to be vigilant while using storage facilities, as these locations could become an easy target for thieves.
