San Antonio Roads Reach High Temperatures

As summer sets in, the temperature in San Antonio has soared not just in the air but on the roads too. The city has experienced asphalt temperatures close to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. While this sunshine is great for a day by the pool or a picnic in the park, it can pose a significant threat to your vehicles and tires if precautions are not taken.

The Impact of High Temperatures on Tires

Local auto repair business owner, Chad Miller, has witnessed the damaging effects of the Texas heat on vehicles and tires. “Last year, we experienced quite a few instances where the tires have started to bulge, or they have just blown out while driving,” Miller shared.

Miller further explained the potential dangers. “Especially as the temperatures increase, you know, by that one or two degrees every or one or two PSI every 10 degrees, it can cause catastrophic damage to those tires,” he warned.

High Temps Not Just a Highway Issue

Miller also brought to light that hot asphalt in parking lots could cause serious damage to tires and vehicles. The increased friction caused by tight turning in hot parking lots can contribute to wear and tear on tires.

Risks Beyond Tires

However, it’s not only the tires that face the brunt of the soaring temperatures. Everyday items can also be affected. For instance, a woman recounted how her running shoes melted while jogging on the hot asphalt during a heatwave.

Taking Precautions Against High Heat

As a precautionary measure, both local repairmen and TxDOT advised drivers to regularly check their tire pressure throughout the summer. Routine tire checks can help prevent sudden blowouts caused by the rising heat.

What To Do In the Event of a Tire Blowout

If your tire does blow out, don’t panic. “Pull off right away. Get under control and find a safe spot,” advised Miller. Taking prompt and controlled action can avert further damage or risk to yourself and other road users.

Stay Safe This Summer

As the temperatures continue to rise, it’s crucial to protect your vehicle from potentially damaging heat and ensure it’s in the best condition to handle sunny San Antonio’s roads. Enjoy the summer, but remember to stay safe!
