San Antonio, TX – A man was struck while crossing a street near downtown’s west side last Saturday evening. The driver involved in the incident fled the scene without stopping to aid the injured man. The San Antonio Police Department is now conducting an intensive investigation to locate the driver.
According to police reports, the incident took place around 9:55 p.m. near Guadalupe St and S Chupaderas St. The pedestrian was not utilising a crosswalk at the time of the accident. Despite this, the driver is still held accountable to stop and provide assistance as per Texas law. The driver, however, chose to abandon the scene, leaving the injured man behind.
Residents of the surrounding area recalled hearing a loud noise followed by sirens, stirring tension throughout the neighborhood. One eye witness, who wished to remain unnamed, said, “It was a horrible sight to see. The man was just trying to cross the street when the vehicle hit him. It’s appalling that the driver just left him there.” The witness’s account has been recorded and will form part of the ongoing investigation.
The victim, who has yet to be identified, was rushed to the hospital where his condition is currently stated as critical. Officials will release more information once the victim’s family has been informed. It is still unclear whether he will need extensive medical intervention as the result of his injuries.
The San Antonio Police Department is actively searching for the driver. Authorities have encouraged anyone with information about the incident to come forward. The vehicle involved is said to have incurred visible damage, and officials are urging local repair shops to report any suspect vehicles.
In a press briefing held early Sunday morning, the spokesperson for the San Antonio Police Department urged the driver to come forward, stating, “It’s only a matter of time before we identify and locate the perpetrator of this accident. It would be in their best interest to cooperate with the law at this point.“
The incident has sparked a citywide outcry for tougher penalties against hit-and-run drivers. Many residents argue this incident highlights the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and improved pedestrian safety measures, particularly in downtown’s west side.
