San Antonio recently hosted its annual Point-in-Time Count, uniting over 400 volunteers to collect important data on homelessness in the community. Supported by local nonprofits and law enforcement, this initiative aims to better understand and address the challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness in the region. With a focus on expanding housing options and healthcare services, the city is committed to creating a more supportive environment for those in need. The results of this count will inform future strategies and highlight the city’s progress in combating homelessness.
In a heartwarming display of community spirit, San Antonio recently held its annual Point-in-Time Count to get a better understanding of homelessness in the area. Conducted over two days, this important initiative saw volunteers from all walks of life come together on a mission to collect data on the homeless population in San Antonio and Bexar County.
With the support of the local nonprofit Close-to-Home, over 400 volunteers teamed up in 75 different groups to cover various neighborhoods across the area. They ventured out into the community, gathering critical information about individuals experiencing homelessness. This effort was part of a nationwide initiative that takes place every January, aiming to collect a snapshot of homelessness across the country.
The count kicked off with a press event that highlighted the significance of the exercise. Local leaders, including the mayor, expressed their commitment to better understanding and helping those in need. Their enthusiasm set the stage for volunteers to engage with those they encountered along the way, showcasing the warm heart of San Antonio.
To ensure the safety of everyone involved, the San Antonio Police Department played a vital role by assigning 86 officers to oversee the volunteers during their canvassing efforts. This partnership was aimed at not only safeguarding the volunteers but also connecting unsheltered individuals with potential resources and assistance.
Both law enforcement and local officials emphasized the complex nature of homelessness, pointing out that various socioeconomic factors and limited access to healthcare often contribute to the challenges individuals face. To combat these issues, the city has allocated a significant budget of $44.2 million towards homeless services for 2025. The focus lies on expanding housing options and improving accessible healthcare services.
After the count, the dedicated staff at Close-to-Home began compiling the data for submission to the Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD). The full findings will be showcased in the upcoming “State of Homelessness Report”, to be released this May. Last year’s data had already pointed to a 7% increase in homelessness in San Antonio, aligning with trends observed nationally, which saw an 18% rise from 2023 to 2024.
Despite this upward trend in numbers, it is noteworthy that San Antonio has seen a 25% decrease in unsheltered homelessness over the past five years. In fact, among major Texas cities, San Antonio reported the lowest count of unsheltered individuals in 2024, with a remarkable statistic showing that 73% of the homeless population is currently staying in shelters.
The importance of the Point-in-Time Count cannot be overstated, as it gathers vital demographic information, the history of homelessness, and insights into health conditions among those affected. This data will help local officials and community organizations tailor their strategies more effectively.
In addition, the 2025 Strategic Action Plan will prioritize eight key areas aimed at preventing homelessness and enhancing support services. The driving wish is to create a community where everyone has a stable roof over their heads and access to the resources they need.
For now, the community can look forward to the complete results of the 2025 Homeless Point-in-Time Survey, arriving this Spring. As the city continues its journey toward understanding and addressing homelessness, the goodwill of volunteers, local organizations, and community leaders shines brightly, demonstrating San Antonio’s commitment to making positive change.
