News Summary

A devastating house fire in South San Antonio has resulted in the tragic death of 85-year-old Robert Gonzalez early Wednesday morning. Firefighters responded promptly, discovering Gonzalez’s body in a back bedroom. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the local community is coming together to support Gonzalez’s family during this difficult time. This incident adds to the sorrow of three deadly fires within 48 hours in the area, prompting officials to urge residents to heighten fire safety awareness.

Tragedy Strikes South San Antonio in Early Morning House Fire

In a heartbreaking turn of events, 85-year-old Robert Gonzalez was found dead following a devastating house fire in South San Antonio. The unfortunate incident unfolded early Wednesday morning, around 6:30 a.m. on January 17, 2025, specifically on Schley Avenue. Firefighters responded quickly but, sadly, it was a scene that no one wanted to witness.

Investigators on the Scene

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office pronounced Gonzalez dead at the scene of the tragic fire. Firefighters from the San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) arrived promptly and discovered his lifeless body in a back bedroom. Initial reports suggest that this may have been the area where the fire originated.

Though the SAFD worked diligently, the fire was only brought under control around 15 minutes after their arrival. While the exact cause and circumstances of Gonzalez’s demise remain under investigation, officials are looking closely at the fire’s origin, which is believed to be in the back of the home. At this time, the specific cause still remains unclear.

A Home Left in Ruins

The damage to Gonzalez’s residence is significant, with reports indicating that the fire caused extensive destruction. However, no monetary estimates have been released regarding the cost of the damages. The focus now shifts to providing support for Gonzalez’s grieving family as they navigate the aftermath of this senseless tragedy.

In an effort to assist them during this difficult time, a GoFundMe page has been established. The outpouring of community support highlights the compassion that residents of San Antonio have for one another, especially during trying times.

Fire Safety Awareness Urged

This heartbreaking incident marks only one of three deadly house fires in Bexar County over a mere 48-hour period. SAFD officials have become increasingly vocal about the potential hazards associated with this season. They are stressing the importance of residents being cautious, especially during the colder months. With space heaters in common use, it is imperative to keep any flammable items at a safe distance to prevent similar tragedies from occurring.

Just a day before the fire that claimed Gonzalez’s life, another resident, Gregorio Valdez, an amputee in a wheelchair, also tragically lost his life in a different house fire in the vicinity. Investigations are still ongoing in that case as well.

Adding to the sorrow sweeping over South Bexar County, an 11-year-old boy lost his life in a separate house fire earlier on January 15. The community has come together to mourn the loss and support one another through these unfortunate events.

A Community in Mourning

The wave of house fires has left the local community reeling. Safety officials urge residents to reflect on their own fire safety measures, taking proactive steps to ensure their homes remain safe and secure. In times like these, it becomes even more crucial for neighbors to look out for each other and lend a helping hand in what might be the darkest of hours.

As the investigation continues, many await answers regarding what led to these tragedies, holding on to hope that lessons can be learned, and safety can be improved. For now, the community rallies to support those left behind, proving once again that even in the face of calamity, there is a strong spirit of solidarity among the residents of South San Antonio.
