Major Crashes Halt I-35, Highway 90 in San Antonio

Two major accidents have disrupted the morning commute in San Antonio on Monday, September 16, 2024, causing considerable traffic delays across the city.

Crash on I-35

The first accident occurred near Schertz Parkway on the far Northeast Side of the city, with reports of the crash coming in shortly before 6:20 a.m. The Southbound lane of I-35 was swiftly blocked by the incident. As of now, the details of the crash, such as severity and the number of injuries, are yet to be confirmed.

However, traffic monitors like SigAlert indicate a stop and go traffic situation in the area, possibly causing delays of up to 20 minutes. An extensive stretch of traffic in the Southbound lane was reported as commuters approached Loop 1604 contributing to the morning rush hour congestion.

Highway 90 Wreck

In another part of the city, the Southwest Side had its share of the morning turmoil with another crash that happened shortly after 6:30 a.m. The accident took place near the intersection of the frontage road of Highway 90 West and West Military Drive.

Like the I-35 crash, the far-left lane was also blocked leading to disrupted traffic flow. While efforts to clear the road are underway, no timeline has been provided to estimate when normal traffic flow will be restored.

Impact on Commuters

These incidents are expected to heavily impact the morning commute, especially for those traveling through the affected stretches of I-35 and Highway 90 West. Even after the wreckage is cleared off the roads, the aftermath of the traffic disruption is likely to linger for a while.

Authorities are advising motorists to drive with caution and, if possible, choose alternative routes to avoid these bottlenecks. Timely updates will be provided as the situation develops and changes.

San Antonio and Traffic Issues

San Antonio, a bustling city known for its significant morning and afternoon rush hour traffic, faces repeated challenges in managing congestion. The city’s infrastructure continues to contend with the increasing number of cars on the road each day, particularly during peak hours.

These recent incidents underline the importance of developing effective traffic management strategies and infrastructure upgrades to accommodate the city’s growing population, prevent such occurrences, and ensure the safety of all commuters.
