Uvalde, Texas – Two individuals have been indicted in connection with the investigation into the tragic 2022 mass school shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas. Former Uvalde School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo is facing 10 charges of child endangerment. Meanwhile, former Uvalde School District police officer Adrian Gonzalez has also been indicted, as per the San Antonio Express-News and Uvalde Leader News.
Arredondo was released from custody after being booked into the Uvalde County jail, confirmed Sheriff Ruben Nolasco to ABC News. The former police chief is facing serious charges and was held on a $10,000 bond, according to an official briefed on the case. On the other hand, Gonzalez, the second person indicted, has reportedly not surrendered to the jail and is not in custody at this time. Families of the victims have been notified of the developments, according to officials.
The devastating shooting at Robb Elementary on May 24, 2022, resulted in the loss of 19 students and two teachers, marking it as the second-worst school shooting in American history. The Justice Department’s scathing report earlier this year highlighted “critical failures” before, during, and after the shooting, pointing out major departures from established active-shooter protocols.
Uvalde District Attorney Christina Mitchell initiated a criminal investigation into the law enforcement failures shortly after the shooting. A grand jury was convened to review evidence against hundreds of officers in January. Mitchell had expressed optimism in May 2023 that the investigation would be completed by the one-year mark but noted the extensive nature of the probe.
Anne Marie Espinoza, director of communications and marketing for Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District, issued a statement extending sympathies to all affected by the tragedy. Families of the victims, such as Ana Rodriquez, have been notified about the recent indictments. Rodriquez, who lost her daughter Maite in the shooting, expressed her sorrow, emphasizing that accountability doesn’t bring her loved one back.
While the indictments signify a step towards accountability, families like Javier Cazares, who lost his daughter Jackie in the shooting, feel that more individuals should face charges. Cazares echoed Rodriquez’s sentiments, emphasizing the quest for complete justice. They believe that not everyone responsible for the tragic incident has been held accountable.
The road to justice continues for the families affected by the Robb Elementary shooting as legal proceedings unfold. The community remains steadfast in seeking truth and accountability for the lives lost in this senseless act of violence.
