San Antonio Schools Enrich Curriculum with Global Educators through J-1 Visa Program

San Antonio Welcomes International Educators with Open Arms

In the bustling city of San Antonio, classrooms are brimming with the promise of cultural exchange and innovative teaching methods. Two remarkable educators, Annyanet Saturria Chavez and Kevin Mora, are among those bringing a world of experience to local schools through the J-1 visa program. This initiative allows foreign teachers to work in the United States for a limited time, enriching the educational environment with their unique backgrounds and perspectives.

Annyanet Saturria Chavez: A Teacher with a Mission

Annyanet Saturria Chavez, a third-year teacher at El Dorado Elementary School, is originally from the Dominican Republic. With 20 years of experience teaching at a bilingual private school back home, she’s passionate about creating a vibrant learning environment for her students. Chavez, who also teaches dual-language classes, has made it her mission to help students embrace their cultural heritage while learning fundamental skills.

During a recent science lesson, she was spotted helping her fourth graders separate materials for a class project, guiding them with care and enthusiasm. “Teaching in Texas has been a huge step for my professional journey,” Chavez shared. “But it does come with its own set of challenges, especially being away from my family.” Her eldest children have joined her in the U.S., while her husband and youngest son remained back in the Dominican Republic due to safety concerns surrounding school environments in light of recent events.

Chavez finds solace in the support of her colleagues at North East ISD, who have rallied around her as she navigates life in a new country. “They’ve helped me find an apartment, purchase essentials, and settle into my new community,” she explained, clearly grateful for the camaraderie.

Kevin Mora: A Global Perspective on History

Meanwhile, at Hot Wells Middle School, Kevin Mora is busy igniting interest in social studies among his seventh-graders. With flags from different nations adorning his classroom, Mora’s lessons delve into topics such as colonization, often prompting students to think critically about history and its impact on modern times. Mora, a Colombian native, began his teaching journey with the San Antonio Independent School District through the International Teachers Alliance.

“Many of my students are unaware of the wealth of knowledge available to them,” Mora said. “In Colombia, students value their education deeply, often because not everyone has access to it.” That’s why he is determined to inspire his students to appreciate their learning opportunities.

A Bright Future for International Educators

Both educators have expressed a desire to continue their work in the United States, as they believe their contributions make a significant difference in the lives of their students. Mora is currently seeking an extension on his J-1 visa, hoping it will allow him to continue shaping young minds here in San Antonio. “I want to show my students that hard work can lead to great opportunities, just like it did for me,” he emphasized passionately.

With a national teacher shortage affecting schools across the country, local districts are increasingly turning to programs like the J-1 visa to fill language and diversity gaps in classrooms. Texas, in particular, leads in the number of international teachers, with 761 J-1 visa holders last year alone.

Embracing the Cultural Exchange

The cultural exchange initiatives go beyond just filling positions. They aim to create a richer, more inclusive atmosphere in schools, where students can learn about diverse cultures while improving their language skills. For example, Chavez’s students recently participated in cross-cultural activities with a class in the Dominican Republic, forging connections that bridge geographical divides.

As both Chavez and Mora demonstrate, the J-1 Teachers Exchange Program not only enhances the educational experience for students but also supports teachers in their professional growth. As they continue to impact the San Antonio community, the future looks bright for these talented educators and their eager students.
