Organized by the enthusiastic Kristen Brooks Sandler, the 2025 Joci Awards Director, preparations for this remarkable event began back in 2024. Sandler, along with other key figures like Jacelyn, the head of the Majestic Theater Foundation, and Weston, the technical director, held numerous production meetings to ensure everything was in place for the big night.
Rehearsal Magic
As the students flew into San Antonio on Sunday and Monday, excitement buzzed around the theater. Their rigorous rehearsal began on Tuesday, where they poured all their energy into crafting a captivating two-hour show. It was incredible to witness the passion and determination displayed by the participants as they worked tirelessly to perfect their performances. The choreographer, Christina Belinsky, was particularly impressed by the students’ commitment and their enthusiasm to rehearse, emphasizing the importance of preparation in delivering a fantastic show.

Scholarship opportunities are available for high schoolers pursuing a myriad of fields of study, underscoring just how crucial arts education is in nurturing creativity, leadership, and collaboration. Categories at the awards included Best Vocal Performance, Best Dance Performance, Best Acting Performance, Best Lead Actress in a Musical, and Best Lead Actor in a Musical.
Adding an exciting twist, this year saw the introduction of a new category, Outstanding High School Musical, which aims to shine a brighter spotlight on high school theater programs. In addition to the 48 performers, 21 more students were selected for scholarships in categories like Production Assistant and Student Reporter, showcasing the event’s commitment to supporting various aspects of performing arts.
To further elevate the experience, fully sponsored placements are up for grabs in the prestigious NEXUS @ Texas State University Musical Theatre Pre-College Intensive, along with scholarships from Josephine Theatrical Dancers and AMDA, including a full-ride Director’s Scholarship, providing more opportunities for budding artists.
