The house, built by his father in 1957, was uninsured and destroyed. Joss suspects a gas-powered heater may have sparked the fire, resulting in loss of his home, vehicle, and cherished memorabilia. The San Antonio community has rallied to support him through fundraising and assistance from organizations, highlighting the importance of compassion in tough times.
In a tragic turn of events, actor Jonathan Joss, best known for his role as the voice of John Redcorn on the beloved animated series King of the Hill, experienced the unthinkable when his home in San Antonio was engulfed in flames on January 23, 2025. The fire broke out around 1 p.m. in the 200 block of Dorsey Road, not far from Pleasanton Road, leaving a mark on the South Side community.
Jonathan’s residence, a cherished home constructed by his father back in 1957, faced complete devastation. The unfortunate reality is that the house was uninsured and now faces the risk of demolition by the City of San Antonio. Prior to the fire, Joss had been living in a hotel due to recent vandalism that had rendered his home powerless. It seems that fate delivered yet another harsh blow when he unexpectedly lost everything.
While Jonathan was not home at the time of the fire, he suspects it might have stemmed from a gas-powered heater he had been using to stay warm. It is believed that he inadvertently left it running after stepping out to grab some food, which could have ignited the tragic blaze. The fire caused the loss of not only his residence but also his vehicle, a classic 1994 Chevrolet Impala SS, alongside 30 years’ worth of cherished television memorabilia, including a library dedicated to his time on King of the Hill.
To make matters worse, Joss lost at least three of his beloved dogs in the fire, while a fourth remains unaccounted for. Such losses can shatter anyone’s spirit, especially considering the unwavering companionship our pets provide. In the five days following the fire, Jonathan sadly reported that nearly all of his co-stars failed to reach out. The only contact he received was from someone involved in a low-budget animated project. This lack of communication highlights the sometimes unsavory side of fame.
Despite these deeply challenging times, the San Antonio community has shown its outpouring of support. An online fundraiser was launched, successfully raising nearly $4,000 to help Jonathan and his partner start again. Many individuals have shown kindness and generosity, reminding him that even in darkness, there is hope. The American Red Cross stepped in to provide financial assistance, helping Jonathan to extend their stay at their temporary hotel.
Additionally, various LGBTQ+ organizations reached out to Jonathan with offers of clothing and food, demonstrating the strong sense of community that exists within San Antonio. It’s a heartening reminder that connections and compassion can thrive even amidst tragedy.
As Jonathan begins to piece his life back together, he is focused on reaching out to city organizations for support in rebuilding and securing housing. His situation is urgent as he hopes to avoid becoming homeless yet again. This fire has undoubtedly been an emotional setback, especially as he was already on the path to reviving his acting career in Los Angeles.
In these testing times, Jonathan Joss exemplifies resilience and gratitude. With the community rallying behind him, there is hope that he will rise from these ashes and continue to pursue his dreams, creating new memories while cherishing those lost. The journey ahead may be rocky, but with unwavering support, he could reconnect with the spark that makes him shine.
