While many may know Dobbertin for her culinary talents today, her journey to becoming a chef wasn’t a straight path. Initially hesitant to work in restaurants, she discovered her true passion for food during her twenties while living in the aromas and flavors of Bangkok, Thailand. It was here, amidst bustling markets and street vendors, that she truly fell in love with the art of cooking.
With deep roots in the restaurant industry—her parents and grandparents being proficient food aficionados—Dobbertin’s connection to food is engrained in her DNA. After finishing college, she made the leap from teaching to richer culinary experiences in Thailand. For six years, she savored exotic dishes and honed her skills, setting the stage for her eventual return to the U.S.
Returning to the U.S. in 2011, she initially took a detour into nonprofit work. Yet, financial constraints and burnout soon led her back to the kitchen, where she flourished as a line cook at The Monterey. This pivotal step opened doors for her, leading to collaborative projects like the first version of Hot Joy and the co-founding of Tenko Ramen at Pearl in San Antonio.
As a trailblazer in her field, Dobbertin created a space that promotes women in the culinary world with her restaurant, Best Quality Daughter (BQD). What began as a pop-up venture quickly blossomed into a permanent location, showcasing her commitment to fostering a community that highlights the talents of Asian American women in the kitchen.
But Dobbertin’s ambitions don’t stop there! She is also deeply invested in social causes. Her leadership as secretary on the board of Planned Parenthood in South Texas for three years showcased her dedication to serving her community. Her hard work has not gone unnoticed! Best Quality Daughter was even nominated for a prestigious James Beard Award.
On the horizon is Jue Let, which promises to be an inviting bar experience filled with creative cocktails and a light menu of tasty small plates. This concept is inspired by Dobbertin’s admiration for James Beard’s first childhood chef and mentor. She hopes to create an atmosphere that encourages new friendships and lingering conversations, much like what she accomplished at BQD.
She’s gathered a skilled team for this project; expect familiar faces from Hot Joy to join her once more. Among her capable crew are Alan Dale Nelson and Liz Forsythe, who will help bring her vision to life. Together, they aim to cultivate a casual yet lively ambiance, perfect for everything from laidback catch-ups to special celebrations.
Jue Let has been in the making for several years and is eagerly anticipated to open by the end of 2025. The artistic elements will be collaborations with talented local artists such as Jennifer Ling Datchuk and graphic designer Jamie Stolarski, creating a visually stunning environment that pairs perfectly with the innovative food and drinks.
