San Antonio is witnessing something truly remarkable. Kenneth Jacob Anderlitch, a devoted local, has set out on an incredible 1,800-mile adventure that is not just about him but about enriching the lives of families grappling with drug addiction. It’s a challenging trek, full of emotional weight and hopeful aspirations, and it all started in Washington, D.C. on September 20.
Ken’s relationship with addiction began during his teenage years. Like many, he turned to various substances to escape reality, including drugs and alcohol. But for Ken, the struggle hit even closer to home—it snatched away his mother, who lost her own battle with addiction. It wasn’t until 2016 that Ken mustered the strength to embrace sobriety, and ever since, he’s committed himself to the act of giving back to the community that shaped him.
“I took a lot from this world in my addiction. I got sober, and all I want to do is continue to keep giving back,” expressed Ken.
But this journey isn’t merely about personal redemption; it’s a mission to raise awareness and financial support for the Families in Recovery Program. This initiative focuses on helping families stay together during the difficult journey of recovery from drug addiction. Ken has seen firsthand the barriers families face, especially that paralyzing fear of losing their loved ones while they seek recovery.
“A lot of the problems I saw were that families wanted to move forward with recovery, but that fear of losing your kid was a significant barrier,” he explained. Ken’s aim is to create a safe space for families, allowing them to overcome such fears and ultimately heal together.
As of October 9, Anderlitch has covered nearly 600 miles of his monumental run. That’s no small feat! As he travels through the scenic routes of the East and Southern United States, he’s also rallying support for his cause, aiming to raise $50 for every mile he conquers. By the time he reaches his beloved San Antonio, he hopes to have gathered a whopping $90,000.
Currently near Camden, Tennessee, Ken has successfully raised about $21,575. His enthusiasm is infectious, and despite the physical and emotional demands of the journey, he maintains a positive outlook. “I never thought that I was going to be running halfway across America,” he admitted with a chuckle. “But I want this to be about families who have gone through it and who are getting over it.”
Ken is inviting anyone who wants to follow his journey to connect with him on social media. His Facebook page offers updates on his progress, and it’s the perfect way to engage with his incredible story. He hopes to inspire others and keep the conversations going about recovery and support for families.
Ken Anderlitch is more than just a runner; he’s a beacon of hope for many. His journey underscores the importance of community, resilience, and the understanding that nobody has to face addiction alone. As he faces the road ahead, every mile he runs highlights a commitment not just to himself but to all the families who are bravely navigating the turbulent waters of addiction.
As we cheer him on from San Antonio, let’s remember that every step is a part of a larger story. A story of healing, hope, and togetherness—a reminder that through our struggles, we can emerge stronger, and in Ken’s case, we can help others along the way.
