In a recent twist of events, KFC has decided to pack its bags and head to the Lone Star State, making Plano, Texas, the new home for its US headquarters. This marks a significant shift for the famed fried chicken brand, which has been rooted in Louisville, Kentucky, since its inception by Colonel Harland Sanders.
With this move, the parent company, Yum Brands, is all about fostering a collaborative culture among its various brands and employees. By designating two prominent headquarters – one in Plano, Texas, and another in Irvine, California – Yum aims to streamline operations for brands including Taco Bell and Habit Burger & Grill. This restructuring reflects a growing trend in the corporate world where businesses seek to adapt to a more dynamic and cooperative working environment.
Don’t worry, Kentuckians! While KFC is making a geographic change, it’s not saying goodbye to Louisville just yet. Yum Brands will keep several corporate operations in place, such as the KFC Foundation and certain corporate offices. So, while the headquarters is moving, the connection to KFC’s historical roots remains strong.
For about 100 KFC employees based in Louisville, it’s time to get packing. They’ll need to relocate to the new Plano headquarters within the next six months. Additionally, another 90 remote workers will also be encouraged to make the move over an 18-month period. This consolidation aims to enhance service for customers, employees, franchisees, and shareholders. So, it’s a bit of a logistical shuffle, but it keeps the ball rolling!
KFC boasts over 4,100 stores across the US and an impressive more than 30,000 locations worldwide in over 145 countries. Recently, the brand hit a milestone with an 8% global sales growth in the fourth quarter, pulling in a nice 6% increase in sales specifically from KFC. It’s safe to say the chicken game is strong!
Even with the headquarters move, KFC hasn’t forgotten its roots. The company is keeping the spirit of Louisville alive by committing to a generous $1 million endowment to the University of Louisville. This funding aims to boost scholarships and support the Yum! Center for Global Franchise Excellence, ensuring that KFC continues to nurture future talent right there in Kentucky.
In a bid to maintain its brand presence in its original hometown, KFC is also looking to develop a flagship restaurant in Louisville. This move is reminiscent of a family that doesn’t forget where it came from, ensuring that while they might be settling in a new state, their heart is still in Kentucky.
It’s becoming clear that companies are flocking to Texas, drawn by the allure of lower taxes and a favorable business environment. KFC isn’t the only one to make this leap; in 2020, rival fast-food chain Papa Johns made a similar trek from Louisville to Atlanta while still keeping some operations back home.
So, there you have it! KFC may be setting up shop in Texas, but its legacy will always hold a special place in Kentucky.
