San Antonio, we’ve got a bit of an unusual situation on our hands. If you’ve been living in the far Northwest area lately, you might have heard whispers of a large cat sighting. Yes, you heard that right! A big, long-tailed, dark-colored creature has reportedly been spotted, and it’s leaving many residents curious and a tad concerned.
It all started on Monday, October 29, when a resident in the Helotes subdivision noticed something unusual lurking behind her home. The sighting took place in the 10400 block of Foxen Way, near the intersection of Bandera and Scenic Loop Road. After she reported it, deputies from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) promptly responded to investigate. They searched the surrounding area, especially the greenbelt behind her property, but despite their efforts, they couldn’t track down the mysterious feline.
As of Thursday, October 31, the search remains open, and the BCSO is monitoring the situation closely. There haven’t been any new calls from residents regarding additional sightings, which makes it all the more puzzling. The officials have been quite appreciative of the community’s participation, encouraging residents to check their cameras for any possible footage of the large cat.
In light of these happenings, the BCSO has advised residents in the area to stay alert and take precautions. They recommend keeping outdoor pets inside for the time being and supervising children when they’re playing outside. It’s always better to err on the side of caution, right? Remember, while it may sound intriguing to see a big cat roaming in your neighborhood, it’s essential to prioritize safety.
While the species of this large cat hasn’t been identified yet, it’s worth noting that San Antonio isn’t a stranger to such sightings. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) reports that mountain lions, a notable member of the cat family, have been observed in Bexar County before. In fact, the last confirmed sighting of a mountain lion in the area was back in 2013, near Canyon Ridge Elementary School and Barbara Bush Middle School in Stone Oak.
Since the TPWD started documenting these sightings in 1982, only three mountain lion encounters have been officially recorded in Bexar County. Still, officials indicate that mountain lions are moving closer to urban areas like San Antonio. But before you panic, remember that attacks on humans are extremely rare. Since 1980, there have only been four reported incidents in Texas, all happening in remote regions of West Texas.
If you happen to spot this large cat, or any wild creature for that matter, it’s crucial not to approach it. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office has a dedicated line for wildlife sightings, so if you see something unusual, give them a call at 210-335-6000.
Whether you’re out on a stroll, gardening, or letting your pets romp around, keeping an eye out for this mysterious cat will not only ensure your safety but could also provide valuable information to the local authorities. As more residents join in the search and keep their eyes peeled, let’s hope we can get to the bottom of this local mystery together!
