Live Music in San Antonio This Week: Interpol, Heart, Shakey Graves and more

Buzzing Music Scene in San Antonio

San Antonio’s bustling live music scene is set to entertain locals and visitors alike this week with a diverse line-up of acts ranging from arena rock to ukuleles. The Alamo city is poised for a musical bonanza with headliners such as Interpol, Heart, Shakey Graves, and ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro gracing various stages across town.

Arena Rock Pioneers: Heart and Cheap Trick

The sisters and rock pioneers, Ann and Nancy Wilson, are revved up to bring back ’70s and ’80s radio staple band Heart, resuming after a four-year hiatus. Coming onto the music scene in 1975 with its debut “Dreamboat Annie,” Heart’s tunes “Magic Man” and “Crazy On You” were chartbusters. Hall of Fame affirmed since 2016, their accompanying act will be Cheap Trick. Known for blending elements of power-pop and hard rock, the night promises an unforgettable rock fest at the Frost Bank Center.

Country Blues with Shakey Graves and Angel White

Austin’s own Shakey Graves, aka Alejandro Rose-Garcia, adds Americana flavors to the mix. Launching his music career spontaneously after his album “Roll The Bones” was deemed Bandcamp’s Album of The Week, he has since dropped his latest release “Movie of The Week”. Texas native folk singer Angel White is set to be his opening act at Stable Hall.

Experimental Sounds: Heavy Meddo, Thor & Friends, Gary Davenport, Space Available

Homegrown San Antonio experimental musician Bill Baird is all set to drop two new solo albums performed by his band Heavy Meddo. One album, the Iceland-recorded “Astral Suitcase”, is what Baird labels as “mutant pop,” the other “Soundtrack” is a collection of instrumentals. Also taking center stage are Austin-based percussionist Thor Harris, longtime SA music maestro Gary Davenport, and electro-experimental act Space Available. The evening at The Lonesome Rose promises an auditory delight for fans of frontier music.

Folklife Festival: New Folk Winners

An integral part of the Kerrville Folk Festival Americana is the New Folk competition that showcases emerging songwriters. Previous winners include luminaries like Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith, Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen, John Gorka, David Wilcox, and James McMurtry. The winners of this year will be performing at this event held at an intimate place called the Bowman Backyard.

Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder

Country sensation Ricky Skaggs, who soared high in the ’80s with platinum records and plenty of hits, joins the mix. Known for his mastery of the mandolin, he will be accompanied by Kentucky Thunder, a string band that supported him on the Grammy-winning album “Bluegrass Rules!” The event is a must for all bluegrass, traditional country music, and outstanding musicianship enthusiasts.

Alternative Rock: Interpol

Interpol from New York, which served as the budding artist for the boom of Alternative Rock in the early 2000s, will be another attraction. Famous for their singles “Obstacle 1” and “Evil,” they continue to release new music, the latest being “The Other Side Of Make-Believe” in 2022.

Jake Shimabukuro: Master of Ukulele

Jake Shimabukuro, known for his proficiency in jazz, folk, blues, rock, classical, and flamenco on the ukulele, is another highlight. The Hawaiian player has topped the Billboard World Music charts multiple times and has released 32 albums, including his highly personal recent one, titled “Grateful”.

With its vibrant and eclectic music scene, San Antonio offers a sublime mix of music events and performances this week. The city’s stages are open for everyone who loves a good melody or beat.
