Live Music in San Antonio This Week: Alejandro Escovedo, Samara Joy, High Desert Queen

San Antonio’s music scene is brimming with a mix of fabled veterans and emerging stars showcasing the diversity and creativity of Texas’s artistic heritage. The lineup this week features artists crossing various genres, including rock, R&B, Americana, jazz, and psychedelic rock.

Alejandro Escovedo

San Antonio native Alejandro Escovedo, revered over decades for his blending of punk, cowpunk, rock and Americana music, is set to write another chapter in his illustrious career. Escovedo, an Austin-based singer-songwriter, owes his fame to his inherent ability to transcend musical genres fluently. His past stints with influential groups including Rank and File and True Believers have garnered him a prince-like status in Texas’s music community.

The Friday, May 31, performance will reflect Escovedo’s lifework, showcasing the rich breadth of his music, taking us through his journey from the famed Chelsea Hotel in New York City to the expansive music landscapes of Texas. Both Escovedo’s fans and music enthusiasts can look forward to an unforgettable evening at Stable Hall.

Samara Joy

On Saturday, June 1, Samara Joy, a jazz singer who echoes the styles of giants like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, will grace the Carver Community Cultural Center. At just 23 years old, Joy’s budding career in jazz has already earned her recognition. Her distinguished command of the classic jazz genre bagged her Best New Artist in both 2021’s JazzTimes Critics Poll and the 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition.

The sold-out concert is evidence of her growing popularity among jazz aficionados in San Antonio who are eager to see the captivating performer, predicted to have a promising career ahead.

High Desert Queen

Austin’s High Desert Queen known for their stoner/doom/fuzz rock flavors are promoting their second album “Palm Reader”. Released under Magnetic Eye Records, the album uncovers another layer in the realm of sludge and heavy psych musical styles. The band will be supported by Houston’s Warlung along with San Antonio favorites Syr and Diamond Denim at The Amp Room.

Dreamer Boy and Nitefire

Dreamer Boy, the indie-rock project created by Waco native Zach Taylor, will be exhibiting his amalgamation of Americana, R&B, and rock accentuated by Taylor’s homely Southern twang. This will be a performance inspired by Taylor’s traverse from Nashville to Los Angeles, indicative in his latest album, Lonestar – an audacious journey across the United States.

Taylor channels his inner Ziggy Stardust on stage by adopting a rodeo clown persona. The rousing performance will take place at Paper Tiger.

San Antonio continues its streak of offering both locals and visitors a unique musical experience by hosting these brilliant and diverse artists. For updates on these and upcoming events, follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter or sign up for our RSS Feed.
