Longview is actively seeking input from residents regarding the placement of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. A public meeting held on January 8, 2024, at the Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center aimed to discuss potential locations. With funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, Texas is set to receive $400 million for EV infrastructure. Residents have until January 31 to complete an online survey and suggest locations, contributing to a draft plan that will be submitted to the Texas Department of Transportation in spring 2024.
Hey there, folks of Longview! Have you ever thought about how many electric vehicles (EVs) are popping up on our roads? Well, it turns out that the Longview Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is keen to hear your thoughts on where we should put charging stations for these eco-friendly rides. Mark your calendars; the MPO is on a mission to gather community input!
On January 8, 2024, a public meeting took place at the Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center. The goal? To chat about potential spots for EV charging stations across our lovely city. Residents across Gregg, Harrison, and Upshur counties, including cities like White Oak, Gladewater, and Lakeport, are invited to roll up their sleeves and help shape the future of our transportation network.
Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, Texas is set to receive an impressive $400 million to build an extensive EV charging network along major corridors, including Interstate 20. That’s right! We’re talking about a real investment in the future of clean energy and accessible transportation. But, where do these stations fit into the fabric of Longview? That’s where you come in!
Residents still have time to share their opinions. You can fill out an online survey until January 31, 2024. There’s even an interactive map where you can propose your favorite charging station locations. This is your chance to voice where you’d like to see these stations popping up!
The data collected from your feedback will be carefully considered and put together into a draft plan in February or March. You can expect to see the plan highlighting popular locations where residents want these charging stations to be placed.
After the draft is prepared, the finalized plan is set to be submitted to the Texas Department of Transportation by spring 2024. It’s an exciting process, and local Director of Longview MPO is eager to emphasize just how crucial your input is in determining the final outcomes. Early survey results show a strong interest in placing charging stations around Longview Mall and downtown areas.
While it may be a while until these federally funded chargers are built—as planning and construction can take a few years—success in securing the chargers is just the beginning. Selected contractors will dive into determining exact locations based on where the community showed the most interest.
To fuel this initiative further, Longview MPO is also working on a reimbursement grant of $1.2 million from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program. This funding will be crucial for the construction and maintenance of those shiny new charging stations.
Of course, with every new project come concerns. Some residents shared their thoughts on how tax dollars would be allocated for this venture—or rather, how these funds come from the federal government, easing some apprehensions. If you’re following these trends, you’ll know that as of July 2024, Texas had a whopping 293,436 plug-in and fully electric vehicles on the roads! That number has been climbing steadily, and it looks like our future is electric.
This is just the beginning for Longview, and additional public meetings and feedback channels will be opened up as part of this planning process. Keep an eye out for more opportunities to weigh in, because your voice really does count in shaping a greener future for our community.
So, what are you waiting for? Jump online and make your voice heard before the January 31 deadline! Together, we can make Longview a shining example of what a forward-thinking city should look like.
