San Antonio residents, it’s that time again! Heads up for a significant highway closure happening this weekend that will impact drivers on the city’s Northwest Side. If you frequently travel along Loop 1604, be prepared for some changes as officials from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) have announced that Loop 1604 will be completely closed in both directions at the Interstate 10 interchange. This includes the cloverleaf ramps leading in and out of the area.
The closure kicks off at 9 p.m. on Friday, October 18, and is expected to wrap up at 5 a.m. on Monday, October 21. While I-10 will remain open, those who rely on Loop 1604 to navigate around town should definitely plan accordingly.
With a large crowd anticipated at Six Flags on Saturday, TxDOT has taken precautions by coordinating with local law enforcement. Police presence will be set up at the La Cantera and I-10 intersection to help manage the expected influx of traffic. Moreover, they’ve reached out to Six Flags to provide support at its entrance as well, ensuring that traffic doesn’t back up unnecessarily.
Good news for local business owners and shoppers alike! Despite the closures, access to all businesses in the area will remain open during construction, so you can continue your weekend plans without a hitch. When you do head out, remember to use maps or navigation apps to keep track of real-time traffic conditions.
This closure is part of a larger construction project that started back in January, aimed at installing steel beams for new flyover ramps at the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange. The progress has been quite impressive, with TxDOT reporting that the steel beam installation is currently 63% complete. So far, 95 beams have been successfully put in place. Excitingly, in the coming months, the first of these new flyover ramps is set to open, creating a new connection for drivers traveling from eastbound Loop 1604 to westbound I-10.
As with any construction project, things can change quickly, so there’s a chance that the closures may lift earlier than scheduled if the work is completed ahead of time and deemed safe for drivers. Always keep an ear out for updates to prevent any last-minute surprises!
In summary, San Antonio drivers should approach the weekend with some caution as they navigate around the Loop 1604 closure. Whether it’s a shopping trip, an outing to Six Flags, or just day-to-day travel, it’s best to plan your route and stay informed throughout the weekend. Happy driving, and stay safe out there!
