San Antonio Braces for Major Road Closures: Loop 1604 Expansion Project Underway

San Antonio residents, it’s time to buckle up and be prepared for some significant road closures! The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is gearing up for the Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, and this means some nighttime disruptions for local drivers. If you’re planning to hit the roads this week, you’re gonna want to pay close attention to the details.

Key Closure Details

Starting now and running through Saturday, you’ll notice that the Loop 1604 eastbound mainlanes will see closures from the Vance Jackson Road exit ramp all the way to the Lockhill Selma Road entrance ramp. These closures kick off at 9 p.m. every night and last until 5 a.m., creating a late-night navigation challenge for anyone with a commute during these hours.

More Impacted Areas

But that’s not all! Additional closures will affect drivers on:

  • I-10 westbound mainlane exit ramp leading to Loop 1604 mainlanes.
  • I-10 southwest cloverleaf exit ramp to Loop 1604 eastbound mainlanes.

Why all these closures? It’s necessary for ongoing bridge construction, making it critical to stay informed and adjust your travel plans accordingly. And don’t forget, all the closures do depend on the weather, so keep an eye on those forecasts!

Detour Directions

If you find yourself in the midst of these closures, don’t stress! TxDOT has prepared some detour routes to help you get around. Here’s what you need to know:

For Loop 1604 Eastbound Mainlanes:
    Exit at Vance Jackson Road.
  • Continue on the Loop 1604 EB frontage road.
  • Re-enter at the Lockhill Selma Road entrance ramp.
For I-10 Westbound to Loop 1604 Eastbound:
  • Traffic traveling west on I-10 should use the frontage road exit ramp (just north of UTSA Boulevard).
  • Join the Loop 1604 EB frontage road and enter via Lockhill Selma Road.
For I-10 Eastbound to Loop 1604 Eastbound:
  • Drivers heading east on I-10 will need to take the frontage road exit ramp (just south of La Cantera Parkway).
  • From there, continue to the Loop 1604 EB frontage road and enter via Lockhill Selma Road.

Looking Ahead

While these upcoming closures might cause a few headaches, it’s all part of a much larger plan to improve and expand our highway systems. Projects like the Loop 1604 expansion and the ongoing I-35 expansion, which has a whopping estimated cost of $3.03 billion, are expected to reshape commuting in the years to come. However, with major construction comes the reality of delays and congestion.

Safety First!

It’s essential to keep safety at the forefront, especially in construction zones. Past incidents have raised concerns regarding driver safety, including dangers posed by inadequate signage and vehicles winding up on partially demolished ramps. This is why TxDOT strongly advises all drivers to slow down, adhere to speed limits, and stay alert while navigating these work zones.

Local authorities and law enforcement will be on-site to help direct traffic at various intersections, ensuring that everyone gets through as smoothly as possible. Keeping aware of construction can make a big difference in your travel experience, so mark those calendars and plan ahead!
