San Antonio, TX – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is easing some of the traffic woes this summer by revising the construction schedule on the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange. The move aims to reduce traffic congestion on this busy corridor. The new schedule for the Loop 1604 North Expansion will result in a total of six weekends with fewer or no closures at the interchange from now till Labor Day weekend.
The past months have witnessed the labor-intensive work of placing and positioning steel beams. Workers have been tirelessly constructing flyovers at the interchange, which is currently 50% complete with 75 beams in place. TxDOT projects to open the first flyover ramp, linking eastbound Loop 1604 to westbound I-10, later this year.
The summer schedule for weekend construction at the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange aims to ensure minimum disruption. The plan involves the least number of closures necessary to keep the project on track. The revised schedule entails three weekends with no closures, three weekends with minor closures, and four weekends characterized by significant closures. Variations include one-direction highway closures such as eastbound Loop 1604, or closures in both directions:
TxDOT encourages commuters to take into account the construction schedule while planning their summer activities. Weekend closures will start at 9 p.m. on Fridays and end at 5 a.m. on Mondays. Although the project may introduce temporary inconvenience, businesses will remain accessible during construction. In an added effort to manage traffic, law enforcement officers will be present to assist at intersections.
Closures may end earlier if the construction work is completed ahead of time and the road is deemed safe for drivers. TxDOT will share confirmed updates every week. Please note, all construction lane closures are weather-dependent and subject to change.
