Sponsor Our ArticlesSan Antonio residents should brace for significant traffic disruptions this weekend due to closures on Loop 1604. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is implementing construction from tonight, impacting the eastbound lanes. Expect heavier traffic especially during peak family outing times on Saturday and Sunday. Additional closures on the frontage roads and exit ramps around Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 will further complicate the commute. Despite the inconveniences, access to businesses will remain open, allowing residents to manage their weekend plans accordingly.
San Antonio residents, listen up! This weekend is shaping up to be quite the traffic jam as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) rolls out some significant closures on Loop 1604. If you’re planning on hitting the road, you might want to buckle up and prepare for a few bumps along the way.
Starting tonight, Friday, January 31, 2025, drivers will encounter closures on the eastbound lanes of Loop 1604, particularly between the exit ramp for Hausman Road and the entrance ramp for Kyle Seale Parkway. This closure will begin at 9 p.m. and will last until 7 a.m. Saturday morning, February 1. It’s no secret that weekends are prime time for family outings, errands, or, let’s face it, just strolling around town. So people should be prepared for some heavier-than-usual traffic.
If you think that’s it, think again! More closures will take place on Loop 1604 from 7 a.m. Saturday until 5 a.m. Monday, February 3, as the construction work continues. This whole endeavor is part of TxDOT’s ambitious $1.4 billion Loop 1604 North Expansion Project that aims to revolutionize the stretch from Bandera Road to Interstate 35.
And it doesn’t end there! The area around the intersection of Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 will also see closures of the frontage roads and exit ramps starting from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday. While this sounds like a major hassle, the good news is that access to businesses along Loop 1604 will remain open, so you can still grab your favorite taco or get your Saturday shopping done.
For those planning to travel through this area, it’s wise to plan ahead and stay aware of the various detour routes set up to help manage the flow of traffic during these closures. TxDOT is working hard to minimize disruption, and there’s even a chance that some closures might reopen early if they finish the construction ahead of schedule. Wouldn’t THAT be a lovely surprise?
Now, here’s a little update that some might find disappointing: the new entrance ramp from SH 16 (Bandera Road) to eastbound Loop 1604 was initially slated to open this weekend but has been postponed until February 7, 2025. So, if you were looking forward to using that route, you’ll have to hold tight for a little longer.
As our city grows, it’s only natural that we’ll encounter some road bumps (literally and figuratively) along the way. Transitioning into a larger, improved Loop 1604 will ultimately make our commutes smoother and more efficient. So, while the weekend closures may cause some inconvenience, they are part of the exciting future of San Antonio’s roadways. Stay safe, be patient, and maybe treat yourself to extra coffee while you wait in line!
