If you find yourself wandering down Austin Street in San Antonio, you might want to stop by the newly opened Louie’s Icehouse, a delightful spot that has already started to charm locals. This isn’t just another bar – it’s a bright and inviting space with a rich history, sitting in the building that was once the popular La Ruina.
Louie’s Icehouse is the brainchild of former Great Day SA executive producer Luis Muñoz, who also co-owns The Modernist on East Grayson Street. He aimed to create a welcoming atmosphere where friends and neighbors can gather over a cold drink, reminiscent of the way traditional Texas icehouses once functioned – long before air conditioning was widespread.
“The name ‘Louie’s’ carries a special meaning for everyone on our team. And no, it’s not named after me!” Muñoz playfully clarified. This friendly and light-hearted spirit seeps into every corner of the bar, from the colorful, coral-pink washed walls that still hold echoes of the past, to the lively atmosphere that invites everyone to sit back, relax, and enjoy.
At Louie’s, you’ll find an array of signature drinks and classic cocktails that won’t break the bank. Guests can choose from a refreshing margarita, a flavorful michelada, or just kick back with an ice-cold beer. One drink in particular, Louie’s Lemonade, is making waves, while the Frida Frose stands out with a delicious twist, perfectly blending with the stunning mural of Frida Kahlo by local artist Adrian “DLC” De La Cruz. Painted to the left of the bar, the mural depicts the iconic artist adorning a shiny San Antonio Spurs jersey, holding a cocktail, proving that creativity and enjoyment go hand-in-hand here.
For some added fun, you can find dart machines near the entrance and classic mini Pac-Man games at the bar to entertain you while you sip on your drinks!
Feeling peckish? Don’t worry! Louie’s Icehouse shares its space with Kai’s Caribbean Fusion, which is located on the inviting patio. Known for their fusion dishes filled with Caribbean flavors, Kai’s is a fantastic option for those craving a bite. They’re open Wednesday through Thursday from 4 PM to 10 PM, as well as Fridays through Sundays until midnight, ensuring you can grab a tasty meal anytime you visit.
Every detail at Louie’s has been thought out, including a suggestion box humorously placed right above the trash can. This quirkiness adds to the laid-back vibe, further enhancing the welcoming atmosphere. Muñoz emphasizes the significance of his team, stating, “It’s always vital to put together the right team to keep people coming back. We want people to relax here, to be that friendly neighborhood bar where they can grab a drink after a long day.” He shares, “Forget about me in all of this—the bartenders are the life and soul of Louie’s.”
If you’re in the mood for something more private, Louie’s has got you covered with Antik, their upstairs speakeasy. This intimate setting provides a vintage ambiance that is perfect for a cozy evening. If you’d like to book a time at Antik, simply message the bar on their Instagram.
Currently in their soft opening phase, Louie’s Icehouse is already up and running, looking forward to a grand opening in the fall. They’re eagerly welcoming patrons, so whether you’re stopping for a quick drink, enjoying a meal, or just wanting to unwind with friends, Louie’s is ready to make it happen!
