LULAC Protests Continue at State Attorney General Ken Paxton’s San Antonio Office

LULAC Continues Protest at State Attorney General Ken Paxton’s San Antonio Office

State Attorney General Ken Paxton’s San Antonio office has become a site of ongoing protest by the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC).

LULAC’s Accusations Against Paxton

In recent weeks, LULAC has been actively protesting Paxton’s actions, accusing him of oppression, harassment, and intimidation. This allegation comes after several homes of Texas Democrats were subjected to raids by Paxton’s office.

In a news release on August 21, Paxton emphasized his commitment to securing the ballot box and preserving the sanctity of every legal vote. However, LULAC views these moves as tactics to suppress voters and has resumed their protest sessions in retaliation.

Paxton’s Lawsuit Against Bexar County

Adding to the tension, Paxton has launched a recent lawsuit against Bexar County. The issue at hand relates to the County commissioners’ decision to work with a company responsible for sending out voter registration forms to Bexar County residents.

Paxton expresses concern that these forms could mistakenly end up in the hands of noncitizens or felons who are not legally eligible to vote. In a news release dated September 4, Paxton declared the program to be fundamentally unlawful and a potential invitation to election fraud. He reiterated that registering to vote is an offence if eligibility criteria are not met.

LULAC’s Response To Paxton’s Actions

Despite the lawsuit, LULAC supports the actions of Bexar County Commissioners. San Antonio LULAC executive director Henry Rodriguez applauded the commissioners’ stance amidst the lawsuit. The group has reportedly seen an increase in calls from unregistered voters seeking guidance on updating their voting statuses.

Furthermore, Rodriguez noted that national organizers of LULAC are planning to file a complaint against Paxton with the Department of Justice. The objective is to ensure a fair voting landscape for everyone, regardless of their political affiliations. LULAC also hopes to secure a seat at the table for discussions and decision-making concerning voting rights and processes.
