SAN ANTONIO – The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) has made their voices heard once again outside the San Antonio office of state Attorney General Ken Paxton. On a sunny Saturday morning, members of the organization gathered with vibrant signs and passionate chants, expressing their disapproval of Paxton’s recent actions.
The protests stem from LULAC’s allegations of oppression, harassment, and intimidation following a series of raids conducted by Paxton’s office at the homes of several Texas Democrats. These raids were brought to the public’s attention weeks ago, and they have raised significant concerns within the community about the integrity of the electoral process.
In response to the outcry, Paxton defended his actions in an August 21 news release, where he emphasized the importance of protecting the security of the ballot box and ensuring that every legal vote counts. However, LULAC insists that his measures are more about political targeting than actual voter integrity.
Adding fuel to the fire, LULAC is also protesting Paxton’s recent lawsuit against Bexar County, which arose after county commissioners agreed to collaborate with a firm to mail out voter registration forms to local residents. Paxton has voiced his concerns that this initiative could potentially result in noncitizens or felons receiving these forms, thus inviting unlawful voter registrations.
“This program is completely unlawful and potentially invites election fraud,” Paxton stated in a September 4 news release. He maintains that “it is a crime to register to vote if you are ineligible,” marking a stern stance on the issue.
During the protests, San Antonio LULAC executive director Henry Rodriguez expressed pride in the county commissioners for standing up against Paxton’s lawsuit, insisting that their actions are just and necessary. “We are so proud of our County Commissioners because they have taken this stand, even though they’re being sued,” Rodriguez stated. “But they have been taking the stand because they know that we are right.”
Rodriguez also mentioned that LULAC has seen an increase in inquiries from unregistered voters eager to update their registration status, showing a growing engagement among the community.
In light of the ongoing tension, Rodriguez revealed that LULAC national organizers are planning to file a complaint against Paxton with the Department of Justice, as they believe his actions are disproportionately impacting the voting rights of Latino citizens. “We want everybody to have the same opportunity regardless of political affiliation,” he mentioned. “But we also want a seat at the table.”
This series of protests showcases the community’s determination to advocate for their rights and ensure that all voices are heard as the political dynamics in Texas continue to unfold.
