San Antonio is buzzing with excitement as the traditional game of Mahjong finds its way back to the hearts of many locals. This isn’t just a game of shuffling tiles; it’s a beautiful social activity that’s breaking barriers and bringing people together. If you’ve never played Mahjong before, now might be the perfect time to give it a try!
After the isolation that COVID-19 brought into our lives, there’s a palpable desire for connection among friends and new acquaintances. Kristel Powell, founder of Troop Mahjong, notes how the game provides a perfect outlet for forging those connections. “Coming out of COVID, people were really craving that connection,” she shared. “They want to make friends, but meeting people as an adult can be a little hard and intimidating. Mahjong really breaks down that barrier. You sit at the table, relax, and the natural conversations just flow.”
Many who join the game often turn into teachers themselves. Emily McMuray, co-owner of Mahj Social Club, expressed her joy in watching new players experience the thrill of the game. “We love it. We feel the excitement, we feel the joy when somebody Mahjongs. We’re helping guide them there.” It just goes to show how this game creates a nurturing environment for both players and instructors!
You might think of games as a casual way to spend an evening, but Mahjong requires focus and strategy. “We like to say it’s a thinking game, not a drinking game,” McMuray pointed out. “In a lot of fun card games, time flies by, but in Mahjong, you really have to concentrate.” It’s a refreshing change from the often mindless chatter of casual gatherings.
Some folks find Mahjong intimidating at first due to the number of tiles and rules involved. Kathryn Weaver, McMuray’s co-owner, reassures potential players, “I think it’s not as hard as some think. Once you see it being played, it can feel overwhelming, but with a little practice, it starts to click.”
Playing Mahjong has some surprising benefits as well! Research from the National Mahjong League highlights that playing Mahjong may help in prolonging dementia and Alzheimer’s. Powell happily stated, “They actually give proceeds back to the Alzheimer’s Association because research shows that playing Mahjong helps with brain health, which is so important.” So not only is it enjoyable, but it’s also a smart choice for keeping your mind sharp!
Whether you’re interested in keeping your brain active or simply want to enjoy a fun game night with friends, Mahjong has something for everyone. Powell encourages everyone to give it a shot: “I would encourage people to try something new and learn the game!”
If you’re in San Antonio and want to join the Mahjong revolution, look no further than Troop Mahjong or Mahj Social Club. Both places offer lessons and open play nights where you can dive into the exciting world of Mahjong. Remember, it’s not just a game—it’s a way to connect, create friendships, and perhaps even give your brain a little workout while you’re at it!
