SAN ANTONIO: A 27-year-old man, identified as Jason Bustos, has been taken into custody following an apparent road rage incident along Interstate 10, in which shots were fired at another vehicle. The San Antonio police have charged Bustos with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the incident that unfolded this past Saturday.
According to official documents, Bustos was behind the wheel of a 1995 Ford Ranger when he began “brake-checking,” or intentionally slowing down to unsettle the driver trailing behind him. As Bustos persisted with this aggressive behavior, the other driver reportedly overtook the Ranger.
It was then that Bustos allegedly brandished a gun at the other driver. Notwithstanding, Bustos was able to get ahead and resumed “brake-checking” the other vehicle. Realizing the escalating tensions, the man decided to record the incident on his phone “for evidence,” as per his statement to the police.
Both drivers reached the turnaround at Boerne Stage Road and I-10 when Bustos abruptly halted his vehicle. As the victim passed Bustos, the latter purportedly whipped out a handgun and began shooting at the other driver’s car. The raging gunfire was reportedly recorded as the victim had already started filming earlier.
The victim turned over the recorded footage to the police who then commenced their investigation. Using the recorded video along with data from facial recognition and social media platforms, the police were able to promptly identify Bustos as the primary suspect. On Wednesday, just a few days after the incident, a warrant for Bustos’s arrest was issued, leading to his apprehension.
The court has set Bustos’s bond at $100,000. The case now stands as an unwelcome reminder of the potential dangers of road rage incidents and the importance of lawful driving behavior.
