Man Arrested Over Series of Toilet Explosions at San Antonio Car Washes
San Antonio, Texas – A local man has been apprehended following a chain of toilet bombings across several Wash Tub car wash outlets in San Antonio.
Explosive incidents
The first two reported explosions occurred at Wash Tub locations in Helotes on July 19 and 20. The police were not alerted until a similar assault happened on July 26 at the Wash Tub branch located on 1534 N. Loop 1604 East.
In this latest incident, employees notified the police following the discovery of suspicious noises coming from the women’s restroom. A member of the car wash outlet’s staff reported experience of a loud bang after sitting on a toilet seat, followed by immediate pain in her right thigh and buttocks. Reportedly, she also sustained minor burns.
Investigation and Arrest
Investigations unto the aftermath resulted in the discovery of snap fireworks debris at the crime scene. These small powder packs are designed to explode upon impact with a firm surface or under pressure. Authorities discerned that the toilet seats at the Wash Tub locations had been rigged such that pressure applied on the lid would trigger these fireworks, causing explosions.
By means of surveillance footage analysis, the police identified 46-year old Paul Moses Alden as the alleged perpetrator. Alden was subsequently arrested and charged with arson causing reckless damage to a building, bodily injury or even death. Following his arrest, Alden posted a $50,000 bond and was allowed to leave custody.
Prior Electronics Related Offense
Bexar County records reveal that this is not Alden’s first encounter with crime, particularly those involving explosives. In 1995, Alden was reportedly faced with an arson charge. Investigations continue into these recent toilet bombings and the potential motive behind such actions.
