Medical Examiner Identifies Man Accidentally Killed While Taking out Trash

San Antonio Man Accidentally Fatally Shoots Himself

An unfortunate incident, evolving from what was meant to be a routine chore, sent shockwaves through a San Antonio community early on Tuesday morning. An area resident, identified as Harold Woodrow Thomas Jr., accidentally shot himself while performing the simple task of taking out his garbage.

A Freak Accident:

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the identity of Thomas, who succumbed to his injuries following the freak accident. The fateful event occurred at the Stratton Place Apartments located in the 12400 block of Starcrest Drive, near Jones Maltsberger Road, just before 6 a.m.

According to San Antonio police reports, Thomas was walking towards a dumpster while simultaneously carrying his trash and a firearm. Unfortunately, Thomas lost his footing on a wet, muddy hill during his routine task. His firearm slipped from his grip, hit the ground, and discharged an accidental round. The borough’s police department confirmed that Thomas suffered a gunshot wound to his chest during the mishap.

Emergency Response and Investigation:

In response to the incident, the San Antonio Police Department, the San Antonio Fire Department, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) all hastily arrived at the scene. Despite their immediate intervention, Thomas was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, succumbing to his injuries.

The investigators found the firearm that accidentally discharged near the trash bags at the accident scene. After careful consideration of the evidence and circumstances, the police have determined that the shooting wasn’t a suspicious incident but rather the result of a tragic accident.

Ensuring Safety Measures:

This tragic incident acts as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety measures when handling firearms, even in familiar and seemingly safe environments such as one’s home. It underscores the necessity of proper training, maintenance, safety procedures, and consideration of associated risks relating to firearm usage and handling.

Remembering Harold Woodrow Thomas Jr.:

Family, friends, and the community mourn the premature loss of Thomas, a man unexpectedly taken away by a tragic accident within his routine task. They remember him as a loving individual who will be deeply missed.
