San Antonio Welcomes New Support for Military Families
Exciting news for military families in San Antonio! The Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) is setting the stage to open a brand new facility at Brooke Army Medical Center. This is a fantastic step to expand support services to the nearby Fort Sam Houston, a vital area for many military families.
History of Support
The Armed Services YMCA is actually the oldest continuously serving non-profit organization dedicated to supporting military personnel and veterans. With operations at 94 bases across the United States, this organization has become a lifeline for countless families facing the unique challenges that come with military life. Their aim is clear: to provide essential services to those who serve our nation, especially focusing on junior enlisted families.
What’s in Store?
The new facility will initially provide several key services, primarily focusing on affordable childcare options, which is a critical need for military families. These services include drop-off care at hospitals, allowing parents to attend to urgent medical needs without the worry of childcare. Furthermore, ASYMCA is also planning to offer holiday home opportunities for active-duty members, turning special occasions into memorable family experiences.
Perhaps best of all, many of these services will come at either no charge or at a very low cost, making them accessible to families in need. This is especially important in San Antonio, where a high number of military families reside. To ensure that these families can thrive both personally and professionally, the ASYMCA emphasizes providing quality childcare, which helps military spouses not only gain essential skills but also find employment.
A Growing Presence
William French, the President and CEO of ASYMCA, sees a clear need for these services at Fort Sam Houston. Given the community’s military population, the organization is poised to make a significant impact immediately upon opening. The first offerings of this new facility will feature free drop-off care, but there are plans in place to expand services throughout San Antonio, ensuring that no family is left behind.
It’s worth mentioning that one of the best parts about utilizing ASYMCA services is that there are no membership fees. That’s right! Military families can access these valuable resources without worrying about additional costs.
Honoring Our Heroes
In a heartwarming related event, 10 deserving veterans and military members were recently honored at the Armed Services YMCA in San Diego. Thanks to the National Auto Body Council (NABC) Recycled Rides® program, funded by USAA, these heroes received vehicles that can provide reliable transportation for their families. This gesture is part of USAA’s larger initiative celebrating its 100th anniversary, where they’re gifting 100 vehicles to military families all across the country. How amazing is that?
These vehicles were refurbished with the help of partnerships with collision repair companies, further showcasing the community spirit in supporting our servicemen and women. Since the NABC Recycled Rides program began in 2007, over 3,000 vehicles valued at a whopping $42 million have been donated. That’s truly making a difference.
Further Support from the Community
Adding to the support offered, HomeTown® Buffet recently donated $5,000 to the ASYMCA “Moms and Tots” program, which is aimed at helping military families handle the emotional strains associated with deployments. This generous contribution was made during a special event at a HomeTown Buffet in Mira Mesa, San Diego, showcasing how businesses can step up to assist military families.
The “Moms and Tots” program is designed to foster connections among families coping with the hardships of military life, proving once again that the community stands shoulder to shoulder with those who serve.
Looking Ahead
The anticipation is growing as ASYMCA prepares to open its new facility later this month. The organization is committed to helping young military families find their footing and achieve long-term success. With a focus on affordable, quality support, ASYMCA is ensuring that military families can thrive during their time in the service and beyond. This new facility represents an important commitment to the families who give so much for our country, and in San Antonio, that’s something to celebrate!
