San Antonio is buzzing with excitement as the city prepares to welcome a brand-new, massive pirate-themed playground named Mitchell’s Landing. The official opening date is set for November 30 at 10 a.m., a day that holds special significance. It will be the first major celebration at the site, which has been highly anticipated by families in the area, and it coincides with what would have been the 10th birthday of Mitchell Chang, the little boy in whose memory the playground is created.
The playground is located at the newly developed Classen-Steubing Ranch Park at 20240 Hardy Oak Blvd., San Antonio, TX 78258, right near Las Lomas Elementary School. This vibrant and inclusive playground has been a dream for April and Marvin Chang, who have collaborated with the city for several years to bring this vision to life. April shared her joy in a heartfelt Facebook post on September 16, announcing the grand opening: “What could be a more fitting moment than announcing Mitchell’s Landing’s opening celebration on Mitchell’s birthday?” She added, “We all have waited so long for this moment! With years of wanting this to happen so badly, we need a party….a BIG party!!!”
As families step into Mitchell’s Landing, they will be greeted by a thoughtful design that includes four main areas of play. These areas are:
In addition to these themed areas, the playground will also feature 22 stand-alone inclusive play components. These components have been meticulously selected to foster developmental growth and provide stimulation opportunities for children of all abilities. This initiative stands out as it creates a space where all children can play, learn, and thrive together.
A particularly exciting feature of Mitchell’s Landing is its innovative addition developed in collaboration with the playground manufacturer GameTime. This exclusive creation, called the roller slide safety transition bench, will be the first of its kind in any playground. This groundbreaking equipment highlights the commitment to inclusive play, ensuring that every child can enjoy the fun.
Upon its grand opening, Mitchell’s Landing will be recognized as a National Demonstration Site for Inclusive Play and a National Demonstration Site for Youth Physical Fitness and Active Play. This recognition reflects the playground’s uniqueness and the dedication to creating a welcoming environment for everyone.
As the countdown begins, the San Antonio community is encouraged to join in the festive celebration on November 30. It promises to be a day filled with fun activities, joy, and a heartfelt tribute to the legacy of a young boy whose memory will live on through this beautiful space. Not only will families enjoy the exciting play areas, but they will also participate in a celebration of life, love, and the power of community support.
April Chang sums it up perfectly: “This playground is more than just a place to play; it’s about creating a legacy of love and inclusion.”
Get ready, San Antonio! It’s time to make memories and celebrate the opening of Mitchell’s Landing, a permanent tribute to joy, friendship, and the spirit of childhood.
