The idea of creating a holiday in King’s honor emerged shortly after his tragic assassination on April 4, 1968. Influential figures like Coretta Scott King, alongside grassroots civil rights activists and Congressman John Conyers, worked tirelessly to propagate this initiative. Their efforts culminated in the passage of the King Holiday Bill, which President Ronald Reagan signed into law on November 2, 1983. Finally, on January 20, 1986, Americans celebrated the holiday for the first time, and it became an official commemoration in all 50 states by the year 2000.
San Antonio holds a special place in this narrative. Just two days after Dr. King’s untimely death, the city held its first MLK march, demonstrating community spirit and resilience. Initially organized by Rev. Raymond Callies Sr., this event was meaningful not only in honoring Dr. King but also addressing pressing infrastructure issues in the city’s predominately Black East Side.
As the years rolled on, the San Antonio Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission was established in 1986 to ensure the ongoing celebration of King’s legacy. Today, this march has blossomed into one of the largest in the nation, typically attracting an impressive 300,000 participants from all walks of life.
Participants will gather at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy for the march, which spans nearly three miles and concludes at Pittman-Sullivan Park. Volunteers generously provide free snacks and drinks along the route, while local food vendors cater to the crowd with delicious offerings. The atmosphere is vibrant and electrifying, featuring a diverse group including city officials, corporate employees, students, and civil rights activists. Together, they share messages of peace, hope, and protest.
