Looking Ahead to the Celebrations

San Antonio is buzzing with excitement as the city prepares for the 38th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. March on Monday, January 20. This beloved event is set to kick off at 10 a.m. at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy, located at 3501 Martin Luther King Drive. Marchers will traverse a route of three miles, culminating at the vibrant Pittman-Sullivan Park, which you can find at 1110 Iowa St.

Brace Yourself for the Cold

Now, if you’re planning to participate, you might want to brace yourself for some chilly weather! Temperatures are forecasted to be in the low to mid-30s during the march. While it sounds cold, the conditions should remain dry for most of the morning, though folks should definitely keep an eye on the forecast for potential freezing rain or light snow later in the day.

District 2 Council Member Jalen McKee-Rodriguez has assured everyone that the march is a go, regardless of the cold. It’s great to hear that there’s a backup plan in place! Should the weather take a turn for the worse, the event can be relocated to the Alamodome. A public update will be available by 5 p.m. on Sunday, just in case there are any changes.

What to Expect From the Event

If you’re attending, dressing in layers is a must! Despite the weather challenges, organizers are expecting a massive turnout with over 300,000 participants anticipated, making this year’s event the largest MLK march in the nation. That’s sure to create an incredible atmosphere filled with unity and purpose!

The theme for this year’s march is “We Are the Dream… It Takes All of Us,” which rolls off the tongue beautifully, symbolizing the collective effort needed to carry on Dr. King’s vision. Marchers will also have the chance to enjoy a pre-commemorative program that begins at 8 a.m. at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy. The lineup starts bright and early at 9 a.m., and it promises to be an inspiring gathering.

And here’s a reminder: only marchers will be allowed along the route. No vehicles, please! To help participants get to and from the event more easily, free VIA bus services will be available from 8 to 10 a.m., with return trips running from noon to 3 p.m.

Take Part in the Celebrations

Once the march concludes, Pittman-Sullivan Park will transform into a hub of activities and celebrations. The MC for the commemorative program will be in action from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., featuring various activities to keep everyone entertained and engaged. What’s more? Vendors will be on-site, and they’re well-stocked with thermals and gear to help attendees stay warm.

As if all that wasn’t enough, Arndrea Waters-King will be the keynote speaker at Pittman-Sullivan Park, sharing insights and messages that resonate with the spirit of the day. The community is all abuzz about having such a significant speaker, just in time for a day that holds so much meaning.

More Than Just a March

This march is so much more than just a walk; it’s a chance for the community to come together and reflect on the impact of Dr. King’s teachings. After last year’s event was canceled due to icy conditions and road closures, this year feels even more special as San Antonio rallies in strength and unity.

So whether it’s your first march or you’re a seasoned participant, prepare yourself for a powerful day filled with camaraderie, inspiration, and a commitment to keep the dream alive. Let’s make this 38th march one to remember, despite the cold!
