‘It’s the only home I got’: Mobile Home Owner Senator Asserts Hired Company Failed to Level His Home

Shaving costs usually appears like a smart move until it’s not. A San Antonio resident is experiencing first hand, the repercussions of cost-cutting, after an unsuccessful attempt to have his mobile home re-leveled. Jerry Hruby, the homeowner, has said of his predicament, “It’s the only home I got.”

An Abode Filled with Memories

For 16 years, Jerry has called his mobile home his space, his sanctuary. Encapsulated in the home are cherished memories and a remarkable collection of movies, music, arcade machines and pinball machines. Observing a widening crack in his wall, where the two sides of his double-wide unit should connect, was cause for concern. There was also a disquieting gap through which daylight could peer in.

Home Leveling Gone Wrong

Jerry decided to hire the same foundation company—Mobile Masters Inc.—that had worked on his home earlier due to the cost savings. However, his savings did not translate to a job well done. After the re-leveling, Jerry quickly noticed that his floor was uneven. When he raised the concern with the company owner known as “Buck,” his complaints fell on deaf ears. Excessively heated exchanges led to a complete halt in communication between the two parties.

A Second Pair of Eyes

In response to Jerry’s pleas for help, veteran Home Inspector Mark Eberwine took a look at the home. Mark quickly noticed that the concrete blocks supporting the home were tilted or cracked. There also seemed to be a deficiency in the number of structural posts supporting the home. Observations of a dip in the roof at the street level, as well as unsquared door frames, suggested that the home’s foundation was still unstable. Eberwine conclusively stated, “There needs to be additional work.”

Unsettled and Cheated

The ordeal left Jerry feeling cheated. “This has been going on a third of a year now“, he expressed. Despite his frustration, Jerry’s goal remains straightforward: “I just want it back to the way it should be“.

A Return to Square One

In their effort to rectify the situation, Mobile Masters has agreed to inspect the home again and raise a section of the home without additional cost. This comes after numerous months of stalled communication.

If you find yourself dissatisfied with the services of a contractor, you do have recourse. You can lodge a complaint with the State Attorney General’s office or the Better Business Bureau.
