San Antonio is reeling from a heartbreaking incident that took place late Friday night. A mother of four, 31-year-old Julie Marie Butcher, was shot in the head while driving home, leaving her family and community in shock and sorrow.
According to investigators, the chilling event occurred around 9:20 p.m. on the I-35 access road near Rittiman Road. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire, yet the precise circumstances leading to this tragic shooting remain a mystery. Julie’s vehicle crashed and rolled over into a ditch after the incident, marking a devastating end to what should have been a peaceful drive home.
Julie’s father, visibly shaken, expressed his disbelief over the tragic news. He described how he was in bed when police arrived at his home the next day, delivering the profoundly sad news that his daughter had been killed. Family member Albert Vega spoke on behalf of the grieving family, stating, “Julie was a beautiful soul and she was taken needlessly so our family is hurting and the community is hurting.”
Amid their grief, Vega noted that faith is helping the family cope with this unimaginable loss. “We have faith, and that’s what’s helping us through this,” he said, while also appealing to the public for any information related to the shooting. “Julie can’t speak for herself, so on behalf of our family, her friends, her children, we’re asking for help.”
The police have yet to determine whether the shooting was a random act or possibly related to road rage or some other motive. “We truly don’t know if it was related to road rage, perhaps if it was a targeted incident or something else,” Vega added. It’s a tough waiting game for the family as they grapple with the unknown details surrounding Julie’s tragic passing.
Perhaps the hardest part for the family to process is the impact on Julie’s four young children. They range from a 6-year-old daughter to three older sons. Vega expressed the difficulty in explaining the situation to these children, noting, “She was devoted in everything she did. She was a star, a bright star in our family; she was a beacon for us. She was a lot of fun to be around, and we miss her.”
The family is desperate for answers and justice. Vega, reflecting on the need for accountability, stated, “I don’t know why this would happen, but unless we do something, it will probably happen again.” Until justice is served, the pain of losing Julie will linger heavily in their hearts.
In light of the funeral expenses burdening the family, they’ve set up a GoFundMe campaign to help alleviate some of the financial stress. Support from the community could significantly help during this challenging time. If you would like to contribute or assist, reaching out to help could mean the world to a grieving family.
Local authorities are urging anyone with information regarding this shocking incident to come forward. If you might have seen or heard anything related to the shooting, you’re encouraged to contact the SAPD’s homicide unit at (210) 207-7635.
The loss of Julie Marie Butcher is a stark reminder of life’s fragility and unpredictability. Her vibrant spirit will surely be missed by family, friends, and everyone whose life she touched. As the community of San Antonio comes together in mourning, the hope remains that justice will eventually be served for this beautiful soul.
