Exciting Day in San Antonio: Over 400 New Citizens Celebrate Their Journey to Citizenship

Emotional Swearing-In Ceremony at United States Federal Courthouse

San Antonio, Texas, recently witnessed a heartwarming event where over 400 individuals were sworn in as new citizens of the United States during two emotional naturalization ceremonies. On February 21, 2025, the United States Federal Courthouse was buzzing with excitement as around 200 people eagerly participated in the morning ceremony, followed by another 200 in the afternoon.

These ceremonies brought together participants hailing from an impressive 44 different countries around the world, showcasing the rich diversity that makes up this great nation. Among them was Maria Garcia Torres, a spirited 25-year-old originally from Mexico, who took a celebratory selfie outside the courthouse after completing a significant milestone in her life – becoming a United States citizen.

A Journey Inspired by Family

Maria’s journey to this momentous occasion was fueled by her late father’s dream for a better future. Her father, an architect who traveled extensively for work, had always envisioned an American dream for his family. Maria moved to Texas from Nuevo Leon, Mexico, with her parents when she was just 10 years old. Now armed with a degree in architectural engineering from Texas A&M University-Kingsville, she proudly designs hospitals while honoring her father’s aspirations.

Even though her father is no longer here to witness her proud moment, she feels that becoming a citizen is a way to fulfill his wishes and to keep his memory alive. What’s even more inspiring is that she is supporting her mother in becoming naturalized, as they continue to pave the way for future generations.

Celebrating American Values

The afternoon ceremony was equally joyful, with new citizens reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and experiencing uplifting performances by the San Antonio Choral Society. Mariah Hovey-Ronningen captivated the audience with renditions of the National Anthem and “America the Beautiful.” The emotional atmosphere was filled with smiles, laughter, and even a few tears, as participants celebrated their long and often challenging journeys to citizenship, which can take anywhere from 10 to 20 years.

The event was presided over by U.S. District Judge Fred Biery, who shared a personal story about his Swiss ancestors who fled violence in their homeland. His heartfelt connection with the new citizens emphasized the sacrifices made by previous generations who sought better lives in America.

A Bright Future for New Citizens

Another inspiring new citizen, Kiwanuka Fonsa, 38, traveled all the way from Cameroon to participate in the ceremony. He celebrated his newfound citizenship, motivated by his father’s journey to become a U.S. citizen. Fonsa expressed his enthusiasm about the opportunities that citizenship brings, including the ability to run for office and engage in civic duties.

Judge Biery introduced a moving video that featured the inspiring words of late President John F. Kennedy along with historical imagery of American icons, all while the uplifting tune “God Bless the USA” played softly in the background. The ceremonies served as a profound reminder of what citizenship truly means and how it contributes to the fabric of the American landscape.

A Journey Over Political Waves

Interestingly, these ceremonies unfolded against a backdrop of a contentious political climate. With President Donald Trump advocating for stricter immigration policies, many individuals, including Maria, expressed that they view the political situation as mere background noise. Their focus remains steadfast on the incredible achievement of becoming U.S. citizens and embracing the opportunities that lie ahead.

As the day concluded, the joy of new beginnings resonated throughout the courthouse, reminding everyone present of the beauty of diversity and the unyielding pursuit of dreams. Each new citizen took a courageous step toward making their American dream a reality, ensuring their voices will now be part of the powerful tapestry that is the United States. What a remarkable day for San Antonio and all who joined in celebrating this significant milestone!
