In an exciting development for the homeless population of Leon Valley, a new outreach program has finally been greenlit, with a significant budget approval of $110,000. Prefaced with preparatory work and research months ahead of its implementation, this program aims to offer direct support for those living on the streets.
The program’s announcement aligns with the latest Point-in-Time Count results, which suggested a surge in homelessness. The homeless population in the area reportedly grew by nearly seven percent. But the metrics are complex. In the past five years, homelessness has declined by 25 percent. Presently, the trend seems to be shifting toward sheltered homelessness, spanning across distinct demographics, including families. This rise may indicate that an expanded capacity for sheltering the homeless exists rather than a stark surge in homelessness.
Officials from collaborating organizations, including State, County, City, and Federal departments, allocated funding to make this increased shelter capacity possible. According to Kim Jefferies, the CEO of Haven for Hope, the main focus of these collaborations is on the continued care of homeless individuals. “We’ve successfully been able to offer more shelter avenues, and that’s why the count of people in shelters has gone up.”
Haven for Hope is making strides in continuing care by teaming up with other nonprofits. Their goal is to extend medical services and psychiatric aid directly to the streets instead of traditional institutional setups. Kim Jefferies elaborates, “Attempting to assist people with serious mental illnesses or active addiction issues often proves difficult as they’re not cogently able to participate in discussions concerning their wellbeing.”
After six months of operation, the outreach program will present a performance review to the Commissioners. This exercise would not only help analyse the program’s positive or negative impacts but also guide future measures for extended outreach.
The approval and planned implementation of this generous funding will undoubtedly serve as a beacon of hope for the dispossessed of Leon Valley. By reserving essential funding to aid the area’s most vulnerable residents, the local government is taking significant steps towards reducing homelessness in the long term.
