Rap queen, Nicki Minaj, astounded her audience in her inaugural San Antonio performance, wholeheartedly engaging with her “Mexican Barbz.” The renowned artist expressed her affection for her Tejano fans and indulged in a dance routine to iconic Selena Quintanilla’s track along with a group of enthusiasts.
The Grammy-winning artist serenaded the crowd at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio on Wednesday, September 18. The gig was not without hiccups, most notably the delayed two-hour start. Nevertheless, Minaj’s sterling performance included a range of her hits, among them ‘Moment For Life’ and ‘FTCU’ and her famous costume changes.
During her break sessions, which at some point lasted up to twenty minutes, a DJ kept the audience thoroughly entertained.
The rapper, always known for her close connection with her fans, used one of her breaks to engage the crowd. Attempting to speak in Spanish, the rapper momentarily confused San Antonio with San Francisco. An audience member, however, swiftly corrected her, teaching her the proper phrase, “Te Amo San Antonio!” She repeated it, much to the delight of the fans.
The inclusive star then invited a fan named Esteban onstage to perform Karol G’s segment of her smash hit, ‘Tusa’. The love did not stop there. She welcomed “all her Tejano people” to the stage to groove to the unforgettable ‘Bidi Bidi Bom Bom’, a hit from the queen of Tejano music, Selena Quintanilla.
Before bidding them farewell, Minaj proudly introduced the fans she had invited onto the stage, inquiring about their origins. The revealed Mexican heritage led Minaj to contemplate touring Mexico. She rallied the crowd, “So I have to get to Mexico ASAP, and I promise I will get there soon, but you guys make some noise for these four beautiful people.”
As the Pink Friday 2 concert approached its end, Minaj thrilled the crowd with her throwback songs and rehashed lyrics of “Save Me” in acknowledgement of San Antonio: “This time won’t you save me, San Antonio? San Antonio, save me. San Antonio, save me.” She wrapped up the iconic concert with the spirited ‘Starships’.
Post-performance, Minaj expressed her gratitude on social media. She acknowledged her previously undiscovered San Antonio fan base, affectionately termed “Mexican Barbz”.
