The partners are planning to introduce nonstop flights from San Antonio to Washington D.C. According to Visit San Antonio, such service could stimulate tourism and result in a significant economic uplift for the ‘Alamo City’.
An Anticipated Increase in Tourism
Marc Anderson, President and CEO of Visit San Antonio, highlighted the potential of this move. He suggested that not only would this be a significant convenience for residents, but it could also attract a larger number of tourists from the Washington D.C. area. Notably, the proposed nonstop service would significantly reduce the travel time between the San Antonio International Airport and the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Moreover, it would provide an impetus for tourists to visit the top two tourist attractions in Texas — the Alamo and the Riverwalk.
Economic Implications
Anderson emphasized that the rise in visitors from the Washington D.C. area would help bolster tourism, which currently holds the position as the third-largest industry in the city. He pointed out that one in every seven individuals in San Antonio is employed within the hospitality industry. The potential increase in tourism would therefore not only boost these businesses but could also spur job growth.
Local Businesses Stand to Benefit
Virginia Ramos, an employee at El Merkadito on Market Square, reminisced about the past when the square was bustling with business. She expressed optimism that the increase in tourism brought about by the nonstop flight service would revitalize local businesses and bring back their glory days. Apart from bolstering the local economy, the increased tourism could also enhance tax revenue, thereby improving public services including streets and sanitation, public safety, and others, Anderson pointed out.

As Ramos puts it, “It’s a family-oriented place for everybody to come out and have fun.”
