As of January 2025, there’s a whopping 21,812 build-to-rent units planned across Texas, with a significant chunk of those set to hit the Metroplex area.
In the grand scheme of things, approximately 8,470 build-to-rent units can be found right in the heart of the Metroplex. Among these future residents, you’ll discover that Fort Worth leads the pack with 1,816 units in the pipeline. Close behind is the charming city of McKinney, where 1,293 build-to-rent units are in the works. Not to be outdone, Denton is kicking in with a solid 876 planned units.
And don’t think it stops there! Other remarkable cities within North Texas buzzing with construction include Melissa (696 units), Anna (635 units), Garland (543 units), and Celina (537 units), which also holds the title of the fastest-growing city in the US!
When we zoom out a bit, it becomes clear that the Houston metro area sits in a close second place for planned build-to-rent homes, boasting 4,613 units. Meanwhile, Austin is not lagging too far behind at 4,313 units, and San Antonio plans to add around 2,994 units. All this action means that when these homes are finally finished, Texas will have boosted its build-to-rent inventory by a staggering 70%!
Now, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. The build-to-rent market cooled off a bit in early 2024, with a notable 57% drop from the lofty numbers seen in 2022. But don’t let that fool you—interest in build-to-rent living remains high among builders and developers eager to satisfy the hunger for affordable, quality rental options.
In addition to existing developments, there are exciting projects on the horizon. One notable move comes from a developer planning to sell 75 acres in Princeton, which includes plans for 32 acres of build-to-rent homes alongside traditional single-family options. Taylor Morrison has also jumped into action, as construction begins on a 226-unit townhome community in Arlington, branded under the Yardly name. In Celina, another new build-to-rent community is set to start construction, thanks to Corson Cramer Development selling 40 acres to the Yardly team for the construction of 396 rental homes.

Well, build-to-rent units are increasingly favored by renters who want to trade their apartments for something that feels a bit more like home without breaking the bank on homeownership costs. In this ever-challenging 2024 housing market, where inventory is low and prices keep climbing, demand for professionally managed rental homes is at an all-time high.
