In a bid to combat the escalating rates of obesity and metabolic diseases, UT Health San Antonio is organizing a special event. The event, dubbed the 2024 Bi-National Obesity and Metabolic Symposium, is geared towards educating the public about these increasingly prevalent health issues. It is scheduled to take place on April 11 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Recent studies, including one conducted by the Centers for Disease Control, indicate that a staggering 65.7% of adults in Bexar County are considered overweight or obese. Furthermore, a City of San Antonio report from 2019-2020 revealed that over 13% of adults in the county have been diagnosed with diabetes. These disconcerting figures underscore the importance of addressing these health concerns head-on.
Through the upcoming symposium, UT Health San Antonio hopes to provide valuable information and means of prevention for these illnesses. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with healthcare professionals, receiving first-hand guidance on how to prevent and treat obesity and metabolic diseases. “All those people could come and receive valuable information and understand why we are promoting collaborations with other countries to learn more about these diseases and hopefully find a cure,” stated Carolina Solis-Herrera, chief of endocrinology at UT Health San Antonio.
The 2024 Bi-National Obesity and Metabolic Symposium is set to take place at 7703 Floyd Curl Drive and is free to the public. As part of their commitment to encouraging healthier lifestyles, those who attend the event will also receive a complimentary lunch. However, interested parties must register in advance. You can register for the event here.
