Officer-involved Shooting Following High-Speed Chase Leaves One Dead in San Antonio

A typical Monday afternoon spirals out of control

SAN ANTONIO – What appeared as a simple traffic violation escalated into a high-speed chase and ended in tragedy with the death of one suspect, following an officer-involved shooting. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has officially confirmed the incident.

Unraveling the chain of events

The incident unfolded on Monday, shortly after 1 p.m., when a Texas DPS State trooper endeavored to pull over a black Dodge Caravan on FM-78 for a traffic violation. To the trooper’s surprise, the driver of the vehicle decided to flee, instigating a high-speed pursuit that culminated in a catastrophic crash.

The chase saw the vehicles reach speeds of over 110 MPH before the Dodge collided with a white Chevrolet Tahoe near the exit for Loop 1604, just north of San Antonio.

Incident Escalates Beyond Control

On reaching the crash site, the trooper proceeded to confront the driver of the Dodge. Even after the serious accident, the 38-year-old male driver reportedly continued to disregard the trooper’s commands. When multiple attempts to tase the disobedient suspect proved unsuccessful, the officer resorted to using his service weapon.

After the officer fired a single shot, striking the suspect in the chest, the man was promptly transported to Brooke Army Medical Center, where he was soon pronounced dead.

The Aftermath of the Incident

Following the crash and subsequent shootout, other victims needed medical attention. A female passenger in the Dodge was found and transported to Northeast Methodist Hospital due to crash-related injuries. The female occupant of the Chevrolet Tahoe involved in the accident was also taken to the same hospital with injuries.

The driver of the Tahoe was evaluated for injuries right on the scene, but fortunately did not require hospitalization.

Investigation Underway

The incident is now under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers. Further details about the incident and the identity of the deceased will be released at the discretion of the investigators.
