In an enchanting collaboration with the Classical Music Institute (CMI), OPERA San Antonio (OSA) is staging the swashbuckling Gilbert & Sullivan operetta, The Pirates of Penzance, at the Tobin Center. This comedic production, which has captivated audiences worldwide since 1879 with its lively depictions of seafaring, sword fighting, and budding romance, aims to evoke a similar response in San Antonio this week.
The Pirates of Penzance revolves around Frederic, interpreted by David Walton, who’s on the cusp of ending his tenure as a pirate apprentice. Falling head over heels in love with a general’s daughter, Mabel, performed by the talented Madison Leonard, complicates his seemingly straightforward future. His previous shipmates catch wind of his burgeoning love affair, they initiate a sequence of practical jokes that challenge Frederic and force him into a conflict with his pirate clan.
Besides the main actors, the operetta proudly presents 24 local artists who will join the performance as part of the OSA Chorus. Undeniably, the collective talent of these artists adds depth to the performance, connecting with the audience at a communal level.
OSA remains committed to reducing financial barriers to cultural and artistic access. In line with this, it will open the production’s final dress rehearsal to more than 1,000 students and teachers free of charge. In addition, more than 500 sponsored tickets will be distributed free of charge to students, teachers, first responders, veterans, and low-income citizens. Such initiatives ensure that opera remains accessible and enjoyed by all.
Beyond just enjoying the performance, ticket holders also have the opportunity to attend a free lecture at the Tobin Center’s Feik Rotunda, one hour before each performance. The lecture will spotlight relevant pirate history, thereby providing a comprehensive understanding of the operetta’s backdrop. This educational feature enriches the overall theatrical experience, enabling audiences to appreciate the depth and nuances of the operetta more richly.
The Pirates of Penzance will be held at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, located at 100 Auditorium Circle. The two-performance run takes place on Thursday, April 11, and Saturday, April 13, starting at 7:30 p.m. on both days. Ticket prices range from $30 to $130. For more information about the event, ticket availability, and booking, visit the OPERA San Antonio website.
The Pirates of Penzance promises to be a mesmerizing experience, taking attendees on a thrilling journey through love, loyalty, and most importantly, the high seas. So, get ready to be a part of this captivating theatrical journey!
