A dry landscape indicative of elevated wildfire risks due to Red Flag Warning.
San Antonio is under a Red Flag Warning due to heightened wildfire risks in South-Central Texas. With unusually warm temperatures and dry conditions, residents are urged to take precautions this weekend to prevent outdoor fires. Strong winds of up to 40 mph are also forecasted, increasing the danger of fire spread. Recent wildfires in the area serve as a reminder of the seriousness of the situation. Stay alert and follow safety recommendations to keep the community safe during this dry spell.
San Antonio residents, brace yourselves! A Red Flag Warning is now in effect for a significant portion of South-Central Texas, including our very own backyard here in San Antonio and the beautiful Hill Country. This weather alert, which means heightened wildfire risks, will be in place through Friday and Saturday. As excitement builds for the weekend, let’s take a moment to check on safety tips as we venture outside.
Did you know that the typical first 90° day in San Antonio usually comes around April 7? Well, this year it seems like Mother Nature is in a hurry, as she’s bringing us those warmer temperatures even earlier than we expected. With daytime highs expected to linger in the lower 80s this weekend, the heat is definitely on!
Things could get pretty breezy this Saturday, with wind gusts potentially reaching up to 40 mph as a front sweeps through the area. It might be a great day to find your favorite hat and cling to it tightly, but it also raises the risk of fire spreading more rapidly, which is why the Red Flag Warning comes into play.
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room – the ongoing drought here in South-Central Texas. It has been a tough few years, and the extreme drought conditions have made everything oh-so-dry. With little rain falling over the past couple of years, the dry vegetation around us is like a tinder box, just waiting for a spark to ignite a wildfire.
As we prepare for the weekend, it’s crucial that we all heed some important recommendations. Avoid any outdoor burning, stay clear of driving through tall grass, and make sure to extinguish any unattended fires. It’s always a good idea to keep a close eye on burn bans and daily forecasts for potential fire risks, especially on a Red Flag Day.
Last weekend, more than nine fire departments were hard at work battling a fire in Bandera County. The blaze caused significant disruptions in the area. Thankfully, it is currently under control but not fully contained. Residents are encouraged to steer clear of outdoor activities that could unintentionally spark flames, particularly on a Red Flag Day.
Unfortunately, there was a second fire reported in Bandera County that turned destructive, resulting in 11 structures being destroyed and consuming around 17 acres of land. The cause of this most recent fire is still under investigation, but it serves as a stark reminder for us all to stay alert.
As wildfires broke out in other parts of Texas on Friday afternoon due to those fierce winds and dry conditions, residents in nearby states such as Louisiana and Alabama are also bracing for a storm system accompanied by strong winds. Similarly, the Texas A&M Forest Service is sounding the alarm regarding these extreme fire conditions. If you spot any wildfires, the best action is to contact local authorities immediately.
As we usher in the spring season—a time for new beginnings—with the official start occurring on March 20, let’s promise to keep safety front and center. With calmer winds predicted for Sunday afternoon, it looks like it might be the better half of the weekend to enjoy outdoor activities. Nonetheless, always stay alert and be cautious in this dry spell. Let’s work together to keep our community safe during these challenging times.
