Hey there, folks! What a night it was on November 5th, 2024! As the sun set and the results rolled in, it became clear that Texas has firmly embraced its red state identity. If you were anywhere near the heart of the Lone Star State, you likely felt the energy in the air as the votes were tallied. Things definitely heated up politically, and it seems the Republican Party was the big winner this time around!
In what many are calling a historic performance, Donald Trump outpaced not only his 2016 run but also his 2020 campaign in Texas. This time around, he seemed to capture the hearts of various voter demographics—especially among Latino voters, young men, and those living in suburban areas. You could almost hear the Republicans cheering as their candidate secured a resounding victory against the Democrats, transforming what could have been a tense election night into a jubilant celebration!
Turning our attention to the U.S. Senate race, it was another tight match-up that unfolded between Ted Cruz and Colin Allred. Cruz showed up and played hard, managing to win by a significant 10 percentage points. This was quite the change from his nail-biter contest against Beto O’Rourke back in 2018. It looks like Cruz really hit his stride this election!
Now, it wasn’t all rosy for the Democrats. With just a few victories to celebrate, they saw Henry Cuellar, an incumbent Congressman facing indictment, barely cling on to his position against a Republican challenger. Ouch! Meanwhile, most of the surrounding congressional races were clearly in favor of GOP candidates. For instance, Monica De La Cruz and Tony Gonzales both marched back to Washington D.C. with comfy wins.
On the flip side, the Democrats did snag a couple of bright spots in the form of Joaquin Castro, who continues to represent CD-20 after running without any challenger. Greg Casar celebrated securing his second term in District 35, providing a glimmer of hope for the Democrats amidst a sea of red.
Those local races in the Texas House kept the color red flashing brightly as well. Republican state Rep. John Lujan defended his seat with a narrow win over Democratic challenger Kristian Carranza, while Marc LaHood defeated Laurel Jordan Swift by a little more than 6 percentage points. No kidding—these were nail-biters!
Moving on to Bexar County, the night was dotted with familiar faces retaining their seats. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar and both county commissioners gave voters just what they wanted, winning by a margin of at least 10 percentage points. As for those San Antonio charter amendments? They were all greenlighted, including some hot topics like Prop C, which scrapped caps imposed on the city manager’s pay. Talk about shaking things up!
Not everything went smoothly, as the school bond Prop B proposed $331 million for new educational facilities was turned down by voters. Guess we’ll have to keep on dreaming about that new high school, eh?
Last but not least, former Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin won his election to represent District 80, a poignant win considering the tragic history tied to that area. As McLaughlin takes office, he undoubtedly carries with him the hopes and concerns of his community.
And that’s a wrap on the results from a whirlwind election night here in Texas! As we all digest the outcome, the next few years promise to be as fascinating as ever. Be sure to keep your ears to the ground, because the political landscape in Texas is anything but boring!
