Brace for a significant traffic diversion at the I-10 and Loop 1604 interchange on the Northside, San Antonio. As a part of the ongoing $1.4 billion Loop 1604 expansion project, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced it will temporarily shut down all connecting lanes at the interchange for the most part of the coming weekend, from Friday to Sunday morning.
The ambitious Loop 1604 expansion project aims to reduce congestion by approximately 80% on one of Texas’s most crowded sections of the highway. Shutting down all links between I-10 and Loop 1604 will help the work crew in carrying out the planned construction on bridges and replacing bent caps – components that support the weight of the traffic from above.
These closures imply that drivers seeking to proceed on either I-10 or 1604 or interchange highways will now have to exit early, following which they can use the service roads to pass through the intersection. The imposition of traffic signals or using necessary turnarounds to switch highways can prompt significant backups.
For instance, drivers on I-10 intending to move east on Loop 1604 will need to take the I-10 service road exit, go underneath the interchange, take a U-turn at UTSA Boulevard, then journey up the I-10 access road, back to 1604.
The project will enhance the 23-mile stretch of the major San Antonio loop from a four-lane highway to a 10-lane thoroughfare, featuring a high-occupancy vehicle lane in both directions. Remarkably, the I-10 and Loop 1604 interchange will switch from a traditional four-leaf clover pattern to a series of stacked direct connector ramps to hasten highway transitions.
Originating from the need to manage a rapidly growing number of daily commuters, the project is expected to double in the coming 20 to 25 years. The expansion will offer significant benefits in the form of congestion relief and enhanced security for drivers.
A part of the westbound I-10 from La Cantera Parkway to Bandera Road will also cease operations for traffic from 9 p.m. Friday, September 27, till 3 p.m. Saturday. Over the weekend, drivers planning to proceed west on I-10 past the bustling intersection might have to prep for potential traffic delays.
The anticipation of road closures this weekend, coupled with future ones, necessitates local citizens to plan their commutes effectively. The aspired conclusion of this massive expansion project promises to streamline traffic flow and significantly benefit the local community.
